Looking for advice on shim cards and neodymium magnets to put together for this semi DIY trick.
Years ago (about 50 years, egads!) I had a trick with shimmed cards in which a card disappears from top of a deck/packet and appears inside a pair of card boards that have been sealed with four rubber bands. The trick I had back in the early 60s used Fox Lake cards (which raised suspensions) plus I think the cards did not hold up too well under close scrutiny. The card boards also had an indicator of a small pin hole to identify the gimmicked cardboard. Even that was discovered once by an insistent audience to see *both* card boards! I want to make a version that is more stealthy. I'm using my own card board from commercial boxes (like home depot or other) by which I can spot the gimmick card board by identifying print. I've figured out how to separate the top layer. and reseal it. Just want some sage advice on a good neodymium magnet strength and a source for a matched pair of professional quality bicycle shim cards that are state of the art thin. I could probably muddle through by experiment but help would be appreciated. I've looked on eBay for matched cards and found one source but one cannot examine the cards there. Thanks in advance. |

I think I found the place for single thickness cards. Mimesis Magic will produce a pair! Now just need the right strength neo. I'm probably overthinking this !

This project is a little more difficult that I supposed. Got my sh1ms. The gimmicked card boards that form the "sandwich" for the playing card are only 1/4" -- there is a loud "thunk" when the cardboard cover is deployed, lol! Constructing a double-wall cardboard now. it works much better, the sound is a lot less but occasionally noticeable, too risky I think, I may need a weaker neo. Got my 0.105" thick ring neo's in the picture hanging hardware at the big box hardware store. I think the "picture hanging" detail should have been a clue on the strength

I revamped my cut up Home Depot card boards to double ply and used a smaller neo. It was / is much better! No thunk sound ! yay! The card boards are fully examinable. I practiced the routine daily for a couple of weeks. Sprung it on my better half tonight. She was amazed! She thought the card was just going to disappear. When it was inside the cardboard sandwich with rubber bands around it she was stunned.
She didn't think it was possible ! |
