One of my most successful strolling tricks for younger kids is miser's dream. Yes, I carry my bucket with me and grab the first load out of my pocket before starting. My routine is very direct--I tell the kid(s) I'm going to give them the magician's test and check their ears. Then I produce a coin from behind a child's ear. If there is only one kid, I then proceed to produce a bunch more coins from different parts of his person: nose, ears, top of head, under arm--all the traditional places. IF there are several kids, I produce one or more coins from all the children. Miser's is magical, very funny, and you can involve every single kid. There are no angle issues and you can work very close. You do have to carry around a bucket, which won't fit in your pocket, but I feel it's worth it. I also do a finger-mouse routine for younger kids that plays really well and, of course, sponge balls.

I forgot to mention: I got the idea of using my miser's dream for strolling magic from the Dutch magician Robert Blake, who even uses it in his strolling adult magic.

If this is for a restaurant, how do you deal with the noise bothering the other patrons?

However, there are other strolling gigs where the noise doesn't matter, including some restaurant and dining gigs where the places are so noisy, the noise from the miser's isn't disruptive. |

Try the invisible ball into paper bag. This packs flat and can go from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. Some great info in this thread, thanks to all.

While 10 mins IS stretching it, I've seen Magicians get a remarkable amount of fun from the Invisible Ball and Bag.

The guy I saw most recently was just having off the cuff fun with the Kids and it was joyous. He's had a lot of practice "off the cuff".
(Clancy the Magician in Elk Grove near Sacramento.) He is a guy with several irons in the fire (one of the BEST looking Santas ever, historical re-enactor and Magician) but chief among his skills is connecting with the audience. My partner Tom gets BIG reactions with a very precisely performed "taking of the Thumb" routine. To most of us, this is throwaway stuff but if someone works at these things they can become polished. Many of these classic bits are suffering because so many people think they can do it off the top of their heads without practice or thought. How many poor "bouncing rolls" have you seen. Once you've seen even one great one you suddenly see the Magic. By the way, these are all great bits for Kids. (But think about the roll bouncing if the rolls are in reach of the Kids. LOL). -Mary Mowder |
