Even though we know Shin Lim today as a silent act superstar, he is actually a master of the kind of magic I love. Casual conversational close - up magic. This one goes back aways but is just as strong as it ever was. Available today from all of your favorite dealers. Enjoy!

I love this trick, picked this up on the wire years ago. Glad to see this released in the vault. This effect is something I use on a daily basis. The ad copy says," You hand the deck to a spectator and instruct him or her to shuffle the deck and select any card. You instruct them to lose the card into the deck without your touching it in anyway. No funny movements and you are completely clean at this point. The deck is now in their control the entire time. You then instruct the spectator to spell out the selected playing card, with each card dealt representing a letter. Once she does so, the audience will realize that the final letter will be the freely selected card. " The thing that I like so much about this trick is that it is completely impromptu, it can be done at any time There is no gimmick deck, no forcing a certain bank of cards. The spectator chooses any card. You don't even have to see the card. There is one small sleight involved, that being said, it is very very easy. If you don't want to have to do it there are ways around it but I don't feel like it is needed. At the end of the trick, it is instantly examinable, and the spectator feels like they did everything themselves.
pros: Impromptu, lets the spectator feel like they did the effect themselves, you can really work on the presentation, no forces Cons: If the language you speak isn't english, this might not work for you or might need a little adjustment. If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them! |

Count me as another person who is very impressed with Shin Lim's Spell routine.
It's a brilliant impromptu effect that can generate real astonishment, given its simple plot and apparent and complete impossibility of the effect. The fact that it can be done impromptu with genuinely borrowed and shuffled deck makes it all the more amazing. Some work is required to master the sleight and memorization required, but the method is surprisingly straight forward, and the simple plot makes the impact all the more powerful. See Shin Lin perform it here: I've posted a detailed review with more thoughts about it elsewhere on The Magic Café here: Ender's Review: The Vault - Spell (Shin Lim) - An impossible impromptu spelling effect from the Mozart of Magic http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......c=656248 |
