Keep arguing coke versus
Pepsi...but you better be drinking soda. Yankees versus Mets but you better be a sports fan. Basic duplicity using a false dichotomy as distraction. Less toxic than directing argument at the person rather than your position about the topic of discussion. Address the issues.

Yes the issue is that everyone who is engaged in the behavior only accuses the other team.

From what I know of this alleged incident I don’t think that which Spacey is accused of doing is that bad, I don’t think it amounts to a criminal act really and I think his so-called apology was good enough to settle it. I also think comparing it to what Fatty Arbuckle was accused of is absurd.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Moral turp... or just partisan payback?

This is a whole other subject in my opinion (assuming the tryst was consensual), but since you brought it up... That is, the subject here is: is it okay to out someone regarding their sexual preferences without their consent? My general inclination is no, not okay; however the one exception that I would consider is when the person involved is actively harming those who share his or her sexual preference by passing discriminatory legislation. To be more specific, I am less inclined to be upset about a gay person being outed against their wishes if said person makes a career out of passing anti-LGBT legislation. Of course, this kind of thing goes way back. The case of the infamous hypocrite Roy Cohn has been well-documented. In NYC, while Ed Koch was reportedly well known to be gay in the community, his wish to remain closeted was respected until he opposed voting for anti-discriminatory legislation, as he thought it would hurt his election chances. At that point a number of activists felt he should be outed for his hypocritical stance. But in general, I don't think someone having a consensual tryst in their office is an awful offense (at least not during lunch hour). I didn't think it was a big deal with Clinton and Lewinsky (the Brodderick accusations were far more disturbing) and had the Congressperson in the above story not been such a hypocritical POS, I would have defended him too.

A far greater range of political opinions are expressed in countries with a parliamentary system, though there are certainly problems with that kind of system as well. (Main problem with a parliamentary system such as England, Iceland or Israel is that the small parties have too much influence in proportion to their size, as they can be the deciding factor as to whether a ruling coalition is formed.)

That's always the problem with these threads, as in face-to-face conversation: whether to circle back to the original topic, or to go with the flow and accept the conversation's natural course. The more people involved with the conversation, the more difficult to circle back. Personally, I don't mind either way.

Let Mr. Spacey have a fair trail before a jury of his peers. If he is guilty, punish him. If he is not guilty, let it be done, and let the fine actor get back to work. Guilty within his own feelings or guilty as found in a court (public opinion...?) ?
