Curt - you are so right! I just started using the Silver Scepter, and it kills!! I previously never used it because I thought it was too simple and too silly. Boy was I wrong!

Christopher T. Magician covers this extensively in his book, Beyond Look, Don't See. Highly recommended!

Look don't see can be great, and kids love that kind of thing, and I certainly do it. However, I'm guessing a lot of people overuse it (I've been guilty of that - I have to be careful). It can be used as a crutch for a lack of ability to be funny, or out of laziness because in some ways it's kind of easy to get a big reaction from it, or because the entertainer doesn't realize he uses it too much, or because the magician kind of confuses screams for laughter, etc. Think about the impression it may give to adults when you use it too much. Don't confuse laughter with screams, the kids love the screaming, don't get me wrong, but how many laughs per minute are you getting through the show? And at some point, is all the screaming getting annoying for the adults and some of the kids? And when you do look don't see, can you mix in real comedy and laughter? How good is your acting when you do it? Are you overdoing the same words, body language and reactions? Are you in the moment and improvising by reacting to what the kids are doing? Are you getting creative with the routines and props by doing more than the patter and instructions that came with the script? Are you inventing your own ideas?

True. That can be said about every trick. If you're just getting the kids to scream then you failed the trick. The trick is meant to get children laughing. Sure they will yell out, "It's over there!!" But they should also be laughing at the same time.
