Has someone here more info about this guy?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Dale_Harris I'd like to know how he got caught. |

I read about a similar story, where some guys bought the same machines the casino where using, and since the 'random function' (don't know how to be more specific) of the machines where not 'randomised' before being put into live play, all they had to do was to play a few games, figure at which state of randomness the machine was in and then they controlled the outcome.
Maybe it was the same story, but I'm not quite sure. [edit] seems it's not |

Basically, although Harris was a brilliant guy and came up with a great gaff, he lacked the grift sense to properly conceal and exploit what he was doing. As I recall, but am not sure about this, he used "provable" or "known" relatives to take off big scores and he lacked the subtlety to conceal that cheating was occurring. I don't have time to research this, but the info on Harris is out there. Here is a post I made in 2012 on another subject that touched upon Ron Harris that may be of interest. Quote:

Just reread the more detailed article above again. Monumentally stupid for McNeal to not have ID on his person after winning a jackpot. Harris should have known better and prepared McNeal with a non-suspicious story and demeanor. Just as stupid for Harris to be sitting in McNeal's hotel room. Harris should have had a separate room, preferably in another hotel.
It is critically important not to have any evidence in either room when the big win was made and not have any connection between the parties. Not just a total lack of "grift" sense, but a complete lack of common sense. I think any experienced hustler with an IQ above 60 would have known these things. Just shows that even if someone is brilliant, he can still be very stupid about certain things, i.e., a brilliant idiot. |

Thanks S.V.C!
@Cag 60? No way those guys have 60 for IQ. Or maybe one has 120 (the one who "coded") and the other one -60; teaming up the average is 60, indeed . |

Haha! Nice catch. Remove the word "average".

It seems to me that going for the maximum jackpot is demonstrably stupid, perhaps even more so than having all the equipment in the hotel room (which itself has got to be one of the dumbest things I've heard).

Generally casinos don't just go around searching rooms. ID or no ID. Something tipped them off ( strange behavior etc). The bottom line is the guys getting caught almost always overlook a tiny detail, other times casino staff just get lucky. You guys remember Bruce Koloshi? He liked to mark cards, specifically Mississippi Stud. This guy marked every card which gave him something like a 200% - 300% advantage on the house, if he had of just marked the jacks he would have had around a %40 advantage. The guy went overboard. Interestingly enough he was interviewed by surveillance at L'auberge casino a week prior to his arrest. At that time the guys pocket contents included an empty contact case. Didn't think much about it at the time but after the fact why would a guy have an empty contact case in his pocket and have glasses on. The cards were taken into custody and it took about 4 days to locate the ink and put a case together.
On a second note, rarely do you find two brilliant criminals in the same group. |
