Hi All, I'm attempting to track down the availability of these coin sets. I'm looking for three sets. Does anyone know if they are still carried by online magic shops? I have checked on Eddie's site but wondered if they were available through a larger dealer who might still carry them. The only way to reach Mr. Gibson is by phone and that will be my next step. I know this is an older trick by several years, so may not be available. Just askin', anyone know?

FYI - Eddie Gibson passed away a couple months ago. Not sure if anyone is answering the phone for the business.

Can lost magnetism perhaps be restored somehow? (Any physics majors here?)

It may be possible but it depends on the type of magnet used.

It's different for an electromagnet or a temporary magnet (like one where you put a strong magnet near a ferromagnetic metal and it temporarily takes on light magnetism), but neither of those are what were used in these coins. Yes, it will eventually weaken, but we're talking the scale of lifetimes, not a handful of years. If you store the magnets in other strong magnetic fields it can lessen their power by misaligning some of the the internal domains. Heating or dropping it can sometimes do the same, but dropping is probably not the cause given the unlikelihood of falling directly on the magnet. But you can reaslign the domains by doing the opposite: put it in another strong magnetic field. There is a Don Alan Chop Cup made by RNT2 many years ago. It was made out of surgical stainless steel w/ a bronze interior lining. I bought a used one, w/ the seller disclosing that the magnet didn't work anymore, but loved that cup so much I bought it anyway. Tried some experimenting with it, but no go. I bought another one - same model, assuming it worked properly - but it was also dead. I tried every which way to re-magnetize to no avail. I contacted Donnie at RNT2, and though these cups were made well before his time at RNT, he confirmed that my efforts would only be in vain. The magnets in these cups simply could not be recharged. Don't recall the details, though.
The cup is so beautiful that I adhered a magnetic silver dollar to the recess in the bottom of the cup - the recess is slightly deeper than the dollar coin, which is nice, and it looks really good. Made up a gold vs. silver patter using gold & silver balls.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Again, that's just not how the physics of magnets work. I don't discount your experience, but it is very strange.
Maybe it's different for chop-cups, where there's a lot of impact clinking cups together (I guess that's a combo-cup routine) or knocking with a wand and/or on to the table? Or it could be dependent on weather, if the cups are regularly used for busking out in the heat/sun? It seems possible, but I'd still be surprised. And yes, I know split coins sometimes clink into each other, but that seems like even less force, typically. |

Magnets can weaken over time for a variety of reasons.
It may be possible to restore the magnetism of the Casino Coins (and other props) by freezing them (separately) for a few days. |

I might give that a try "martonikus" ...
wish I could replace this excellent Eddie Gibson's item ... still have the props, but alas the magnets are capunkt ... sigh |
