Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone can help me... I find myself doing a lot of card magic when I'm doing table hopping and mix and mingle magic, and I found I have been drawn into just cards. I'm conscious I need to add something else to my magic than just cards, but the question is what ! I like the card tricks which have an added kicker at the end of them, thinking twisted sisters as an example...where not only are the guests Queens face up, but the rest of the cards are jokers. Is there any great close up magic tricks which have a kicker ending, but not with cards..I am struggling. I have been to a few different dealers now and they always revert back to cards, but I'm thinking there must be some things out there ! Any help would be very much appreciated. |

Where do you currently perform, table hopping?
For the last 18-20 years, when I do table hopping or walk around, all I do is cards. The persona I portray is BIG and it works! Rather than looking for new "tricks" work on better rapport and be more entertaining. |

Mismade bill. Learn a good bill switch. Sponge ball routine. Coins across. Check out Paul Gertner's " a familiar ring"
Massado Rings, finger ring on string routines, Rabbit from hat silk routine, rope routine, look up Richard Sanders. I could go on . .... I do lots of interactive card magic but it's good to have a varied repatoire. into my 16th year prforming weekly at various restaurants All the above have kicker endings.

Gypsy Thread. It can have a kicker ending (mine does) but it is great without one.
Not everything needs a kicker and it becomes overmuch and predictable if everything has one. Having a good Kick at the end of a routine is nice. Always having a kicker can mean one is lacking confidence in some way. I don't know you so of course I'm not saying that about you but it is worth considering. One's performance in general should be enjoyable, entertaining and hopefully memorable. I agree, if you think you have you have to have a kicker ending then your focus is misdirected. It should always be on an engaging friendly interaction with your audience. At least in the venues I perform in. Have FUN!

Pizza Paddle is a great one I find myself using a lot now. Sponge balls. A thumb tip. I know it's not a trick per as but a tool to use. So many things can be done with it.

Paul Gordon has earned a good living for many years using just cards, so although it's not for me it most definitely can be done so as long as your spectator's enjoy it I wouldn't worry about it.

But there are people who will just turn off to cards.
I'm not just talking religious types who don't like cards but some people (and I'm willing to admit they are mostly Women) just don't care about cards. If you want them to watch you have to either use something else or find a way to invest them in your performance through personality or theme. wyptaj, You are making a good choice in looking for variety. -Mary |

I think nobody likes uninteresting card tricks. Why subject people to uninteresting tricks of any sort? Having a variety of boring effects is just as boring.
I am not saying to have no variety. Not by a long shot. I am saying cards are simply a tool, and it is a poor craftsman who blames the tool. In about 30 years I have never seen anyone just turn off to card effects done well. Heba did cards, the Schuliens did exclusively cards as did Eddie Tullach and Bill Malone still does predominantly card sets. Nobody turns off when they pull out cards. Everyone's experience is valid. So if some have seen people just turn off to card tricks then that is their experience. It is perfectly correct. I'm not saying they have not seen this, only that many of us have quite different experiences.

I like some mostly card guys myself, like Darwin Ortiz, Bill Malone, Steve Ehlers, Jack Carpenter and others.

Wyptaj... I’ll make some suggestions but confess I find it a little hard to see how someone who says they perform tablehopping seems to come to the table at this Café without naming any prior thoughts as to what they might do & ask us for comments from those who use those effects in the real world don't get me wrong, to ask for fresh ideas as you are doing is fine, but its perhaps a little strange that you come in empty-handed without any prior thoughts. Ditto how is it that you can come away from dealers with nothing to bring to suggest the table for feedback or comments? Yes, they do have too much card magic but it’s not hard to dig out alternatives. You’d get more out of your post if you’d bring in some prior thoughts and research I think...
Anyway, the above not withstanding, I’d echo the recommendation of a bill switch plus one or two other things you can do with this amazing utility that is the TT... Gary Darwin’s triple dvd or Jay Sankeys $100 Bill Switch dvd both have a ton & a half of not only no cards... but non-bill switch tricks too! (Plus you learn that as well!) The good ‘ole sponge balls is another recommendation I’d echo. How about also ‘Holy Moly’ (Sankey) or on a similar vein Key Master (Craig Petty)? The whole world of ‘impromptu magic’ provides a multitude of I options because cards are usually excluded. T&R napkins or indeed ‘sponge napkins’ (see Greg Wilson) are fine options. There’s many dvds & books on impromptu magic that will help you in your quest if these couple of suggestions don’t tickle your fancy. The ‘Magic at a Moments Notice’ boards at this Café is another place to turn for non-card trick ideas. A touch of mentalism or mental magic could be thrown into the mix too such as a ‘free will’ routine, or using the Pateo force in a routine, using the ‘one ahead’ principle etc. etc! Loads of options! Everything suggested has a strong kicker though not all have a double kicker if that is what you are after (wasn’t sure). Good luck, hopefully something here will appeal to you. It’s meant to help & please don’t take my initial paragraph the wrong way... throwing in a couple of items yourself from your own research for feedback would’ve been beneficial. Good luck once more!

Thank you all for your help and assistance it is very much appreciated. You have come with some effects that I haven't heard of and things magic dealers haven't suggested...hence I will be doing my homework and working out what works best for me.
Thanks again. |

Adding to Mr Smiles comment, knowing a little bit about you would be helpful as well, e.g. are you generally proficient with sleight of hand (SoH) with small objects? As an example, just about everyone will agree that sponge products of some sorts work extremely well, but basic sleights and solid routining are normally required. If your SoH with non-cards is limited, there are still some great tricks which are low on sleights (with the right routine..) such as hopping halves, coin unique, lethal tender etc. A trade off with self working tricks/effects is that they normally add up to more pocket space... |

Wyptaj, I'm a little confused because your website is for, what appears to be a huge agency. What role do you play in that organization?

Hi All,
I posted my original thread one night when I was at an awards dinner and had a little bit of time to kill. In answer to all your questions, I am a Magician and work at a lot of events all over the country and own the company CBguy you found via my website link. I have staff working for me in the office and I am the Magician for the company as well as the owner. However because I am so busy most of the time running the events and business I have very little time to shop for magic. I don't get to go to actual magic shops as none are close to me, and those I have been to don't have seem to be able to help me. The online stores have so much magic, I'm never sure what I'm buying and have been caught out a few times when I order something and it's not very good and doesn't fit in with my style. Hence why I posted this post, to see what else there is and whats great and works, as I am conscious I have been doing my routines and card tricks for many years, but for me I like to have a change to keep it a bit fresher for me as well as my audience. I hope that helps and thank you all again for your help. |
