I am appearing on a podcast (never done that before) this weekend. I am not nervous about performing in front of a camera, my stuff is pretty angle proof. What I am nervous about is the first part of the show which is a "talk show" format.
Remember I have been a classroom high school teacher for 27 years. I also have years of both community theater and magic show stage experience. I should be able to kick-butt. I guess I am nervous because it is new and I don't really know what to expect. Any thoughts, advice, pats on the back etc?

Talk with the floor director, before the show. He wants you to look good!

What Dick said. Also, it's sometimes possible to obtain a list of questions in advance, so you can develop clever responses ahead of time, thus boosting confidence.

Isn't a pat on the back a self congratulation narcissistic thing and wouldn't only happen after you have done something and not before?

Well, I did the show and kicked butt.
Dick, you were spot on. The cameraman/IT director went over all the camera angles with me before the show and it worked out fairly well. Rook, we did indeed go over some of the discussion just before. I was very comfortable and he even said he would ask me back at some future date. Bottom line I had a great time. Will this forward my escape career at all? Who knows. My website was advertised all during the show, so maybe. My only downside to this is if you told the host and crew that they could not use the "F" word, I don't think they could talk.

Now you can give yourself a pat on the back. well done. With being a teacher for 30(?) years, what was going to be any problem? Job done, next.

Warning 1 - "R" rated language from the host and another guest. Warning 2 - I think I look terrible (Camera adds 10 pounds for sure) Warning 3 - Well, I am my own worst critic.

Cliff:
To be honest, I was prepared to watch a "Train Wreck" (i.e. You and the Host being from two complete different worlds)....but I must say that you 'Held Your Own', and did a good job. Kudos also to the Host and Crew ("audience") who were nothing but nice & appreciative of you and your performance. I was hoping that you might "do something" with handcuffs, as you mentioned several times on the program about yourself escaping from them....maybe next time. (or perhaps demo Thumbcuffs - which we take for granted, but the public always seems fascinated by the existence of this legitimate restraining device). |

Hi Cliffg! I well remember MY "debut" on a TV Talk Show! In the early '50s, I was stationed in Norfolk, VA. An "epidemic" of an ancient con game (the "Australian Belt, somewhat similar to "Fast & Loose", or, more specifically the "Belt game" (or, "on the barrel head") had become rampant on the buses from the base to "downtown". Young sailors from rural America, were being victimized, and, were losing their small paychecks!
As a teen age carny (I broke in the business, in a sideshow!)I knew the simple gaff, and, to protect my fellow sailors, I offered to appear on the local TV station's "news & talk" show. The show producer accepted my offer, and, a few days later, I showed up at the station, and, "tipped the con". I didn't show the method, but demonstrated how, "You can't win!". The floor director, realizing that I had never before been on TV, briefed me on how to "stay in the frame" and, how to keep the demonstration. as brief as possible, but still show the con. I realized that, as floor director, he wanted me to 'look good", and the demonstration to show up well on camera. It went very well, and the con game soon "disappeared". A few months before, on the 'troop train"' from boot camp to Norfolk, a porter had been "tossing the broad" (3 card monte). He was cleaning up (financially) until, I showed my friends, how I could win, at will. The "word" got passed, and the porter was out of business.
