Dear Magicians,
I'm posting this on the Workers section because that's where I've posted most of my questions. For a good part of my life I liked magic in an underground, subconscious sort of way. My interest occasionally surfaced when, for instance, my wife and I had a Halloween party for my daughter and friends when she was five, and I was part of the entertainment with a few simple tricks. (I'll never forget the look on one of the friend's faces -- her mouth was open the whole time. I'm not sure if that was the tricks or to my cape and top hat.) But almost exactly two years ago, at the age of sixty, I actually *realized* that I wanted to study magic seriously. Better late than never, eh? A year or so later I started posting on the Café, and I just want to thank everyone who's helped me. People have been so generous -- offering me great advice and things to think about, making videos for me, and even having Skype sessions with me. Although there's still a long road ahead, the journey is very enjoyable, and my sleight-of-hand skills, while still at the low end of the spectrum, have improved a *lot*. It's been a great year, and I owe a lot to all of you. I look forward to more virtual conversations, and hope that I'll be able to give back one day by helping others who are beginning this stange but glamorouos pursuit that we call Magic. Best Regards, Bob |

208 views and no responses?! Bob, I think most of us could say many of the same things. This place is a virtual goldmine for the magical arts. I'm not sure if I've personally helped you or not, but I still look forward to many future interactions on here with you and others!
Also, I've never found the courage to thank the ENTIRE Café staff & moderators in the "I want to see the manager!" section. Mostly because I believe they're busy enough in there. Steve Brooks has done an EXCEPTIONAL job to continuously provide us with an invaluable resource. However, I know the costs of operating a fully functional website and it adds up quick. There's a "MAGIC Café DONATIONS" link at the top right of our screen. I just noticed it and hope many people will also consider clicking it. Here's to an amazing place and an amazing staff making it all happen AsL |

Most in this community are but there is always a few that wish to be spoon fed; they don't want to put in the work. Fortunately they don't last too long. Stewart Judah, remarked, "I have been involved in magic for over sixty years and I've just scratched the surface, but, how fun that scratching is!" We are all teachers AND students. Best, "Vlad" |

Hi AsL,
Absolutely! Steve Brooks and his staff are doing an amazing job. I can't even begin to imagine the complexity of setting up the Magic Café and keeping it going. Thanks for pointing out the Donations link. Funny, it's kind of hidden in plain sight; I hadn't noticed it. And hi to you, Vlad. I love your thought that we are all teachers AND students. And it's true. As I think you know, I'm a math prof. I learn from my students all the time. Your Stewart Judah quote reminds me of something that Carl Sandburg, one of my very favorite poets, said in the intro to his collected poems: "God grant me five more years and I may yet become a poet." Like Judah, he clearly enjoyed the scratching -- it's quite obvious from his poems, even when he's talking about social injustice. Best Regards to you both, Bob |

And thank you Bob for bringing Nick Trost to my attention. Your passion for his work motivated me to but his book.
