For those who may not know....Ralph Rousseau and his lovely wife, were long time troupers, and featured performers, on the late Ken & Robert Griffin show. --One of the last touring auditorium shows, like the MacDonald Birch, Virgil Mulkey, and Stan Kramien shows.

I haven't had a mentor, per se, but Dick has personally helped me greatly in my time as a magician.
I believe that, while you can learn tricks from books and videos, and you can learn performing by getting out there and doing, if you have access to someone to help you by mentoring you, why not take advantage of it? A good mentor is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge! A mentor can share all the info that isn't on the DVD or in the book plus give real life tips. If they are there in person they can tell you what you are doing wrong and give advice on multiple ways to do things. I think having a mentor would be great and after I move I plan on joining a local ring and getting in person mentoring if at all possible. Plus the relationship you build is a memory that will last a lifetime and THAT is priceless. I value all my conversations with Dick and others who have helped me and you just can't get that in a book or DVD.
Performing magic unprofessionally since 2008!

Some fascinating insights here. Of course some top pros also offer an 'Act Doctor' service, where a specific routine or maybe an entire show can be submitted online or DVD for constructive critique.

Thanks for your response! I was quite puzzled!
I can readily understand, when you "explain". My dear friend, the late Dennis Loomis, whom I met when he was in high school, could have been your "twin brother"! He developed into a fine sleight of hand performer. He also had an insatiable desire to work with big props. Fortunately, he inherited money from his grandfather! He designed, and, developed an excellent version of the classic Doll House. He could afford to buy the Harbin books, and built a Zig ZAG. (i THINK, THE first one in the USA. He then, built a second one, with some minor improvements. (I bought his first one to use in some fair dates. (I'm certainly not, a craftsman!) I sold it, without ever taking it out of the crate! Eventually, Denny bought Stanley Kramien's old illusion show, and, toured it for several seasons. He was successful, but, eventually sold it, and, returned to doing school assemblies, which were much easier. In my book, I tell of an incident in which the late Harry Blackstone Jr. was booked to play Abbott's Get Together. Harry had just finished a booking in South America, I think. When he arrived in Colon, he learned that the big props were "stuck" in customs! He had planned to feature the Zig Zag, then, fairly new in the USA. Fortunately, the late Abb Dickson, had bought the late Doug Henning's Zig. Abb had brought it with him in his motor home, to donate to Bob Lund's Museum. Harry, Gay, Abb, and I met in Abb's RV, to check whether Gay would "fit' in the prop. I had brought Jeff Helding, a young man whom I was mentoring. Jeff was sitting in the dinette area, 3 feet from the prop. When Harry pulled the mid section, Jeff's eyes "popped"!!! (The illusion was GOOD!) We had a good laugh! Henning's blades wouldn't fit, for Gay, but, fortunately, Greg Bordner, owner of Abbott's, had a set of blades for a Zig, that he was building, which were OK for Gay. Harry worked the following night, and did the Zig Zag! The evening show audience never knew of the "problem"!

I've never had a mentor myself and definitely see the value in them, but I have associated myself with some lovely magician friends who I constantly shoot ideas off and discuss routines with. Also the Penguin Live lecture series is a great asset because you get to hear the top pros discuss magic subtleties and experiences

On Jul 1, 2018, Josh Riel wrote: Pop Haydn is a fine magician. There are more than a few well qualified magicians who are on the Café quite regularly, most of whom enjoy helping "new guys". Perhaps you haven't asked your question in the right fora. Or, perhaps you have not asked your question clearly. I get very frustrated--and, irritated--by people who can't "write a sentence", and, I seldom even try to provide an answer to their question. Others don't even use the correct terminology, so their question(s) are confusing, to say the least. Example: Your last "statement" in your second paragraph above, is NOT A SENTENCE, and it has a false statement: "You can buy tricks," No one can BUY a TRICK. You can buy a SECRET (in a book, dvd, etc.) or a PROP. Using a PROP, or a SECRET, you can PERFORM a TRICK. A TRICK, somewhat like music, exists only while it's being PERFORMED! If you perform that trick, with a GOOD PRESENTATION, you will probably ENTERTAIN people. [MY mentors, when I was a teenager (in the '40s) always stressed: "It aint WHAT ya do. It's HOW ya do it!"] That last statement is IMPORTANT, 'cuz MAGIC IS NOT INHERENTLY ENTERTAINING!!! There are many people, like yourself, who will give you THEIR OPINION about "something". OPINIONS are just THAT! Near the beginning of this thread, I pointed out: "Nemo dat quod non habet!" (No one gives what he does not have!) If you ask a question that shows that you are willing to listen, odds are good that someone who knows, will help. I just reread this whole thread. There are 6 'likes'. Every one of those "likes" were for threads in which I was mentioned as a mentor who had been helpful. That's good for my EGO!!! Why haven't you asked me your question? I'm currently somewhat busy, mentoring 2 teenagers, and, two adults, all by emails, and posts in the Café. I'm 86. I've had 70 years experience performing, I don't have the physical time available to "take on" another "apprentice", but, I can find a few minutes to at least "bird dog".
