I feel like I have missed something obvious, but I have not found a good solution or system for this question. Over time I have acquired a number of gaffed decks like Svengali and strippers in bicycle stock. Obviously I do not want to blatantly label these various decks but I would like to find a good but subtle way to quickly tell them apart without opening the boxes to check them out. How do you keep them quickly identifiable from other decks—normal or otherwise—when you’re carrying them without the box screaming that it is gaffed?

I label the boxes of all my many gaffed (and/or otherwise prearranged) decks on their bottom ends (meaning if you stood a deck in its box upright upon a table, the narrow surface in contact with the tabletop) with a thin sliver cut to fit it from a Post-It sticky note. It’s small, unobtrusive, won’t be seen if you handle the deck such that the bottom of the box is never in view, and easy to simply remove altogether prior to performance (and equally easy to replace later) if you prefer.

I just put one or two 1/4 dot(s) with a Sharpie/ different colors depending, on the top flap side.
I don't use many trick or special decks but if I do the little dots help.

On the Bicycle sticker, with a very fine felt tip, I label INV, SVE, or STR and I know what I’m holding when I pick it up.
Got this from Joshua Jay’s book. Patrick |

These are some great tips and I thank you all for sharing.
Mr. Woolsey, which Joshua Jay book is that from? Want to make sure I have (or get) it for reference. |

I have dozens of "trick decks". Took me years to come up with a good system, (as well as one for my packet effects.) instead of trying to describe it, maybe I'll take some photos and show you.
Indeed, keeping track of them is essential and having a good system saves you lots of time, money and hair pulling. I struggled with it for a long time. Now I find the desired decks quickly and efficiently.

I use post-it notes and a couple of clear, plastic 5-drawer organizers from Target.

On the bottom of the deck I place a small number, made by my Dynmo printer. On my Iphone I keep track off the number vs efect in a notepad .
Same procedure for packttricks. |

What does the INV, SVE or. STR stand for?

I simply mark the outer box on the side at the top end, hidden in the blue or red, the first letter of the gaff deck. No one can see it. Well, except me of course.
I didn't even need Joshua Jay!

I have so many gaffed, gimmicked, and pre-arranged decks that simplified abbreviations might get confusing (to me anyway). A thin sliver of a Post-It Note (just the sticky part) bearing the full name of the deck (or its primary effect) works well for me.

Dave, your guess is correct.
That said, any abbreviation that works for you is fine. It is just one way to do it, it happens to be the way I use. -Patrick |

I have just written the first letter of the decks on the boxes with pencil. Eg: M for marked, I for Invisible, St for Stripper, Sv for Svengali, etc.
