I've watched it twice now, but it brings me to tears. Sobbing, actually. I don't know why. Something's wrong with me.

Yes, something was lost. It's generous of him to help us recall it. It's an interesting decision he's made in his old age. A friend of mine was at his wife's niece's wedding, and he performed there too.

Stoneunhinged, you’ll probably hate me for this, but I agree with the author of the article’s final summation. There comes a time when aging performers just need to stop. As for the the Carpool video, I found it depressing.

Arthur, I don't hate you. But probably your being a professional musician doesn't help you to understand the situation, because you're looking at it professionally rather than culturally.
I remember a clip you posted some time back of you playing with Peter Frampton, and Frampton (and Stead) admirers were thinking, "He hasn't lost his chops!" Sure, McCartney's chops aren't what they used to be. But at some point he became such a part of cultural history that it stopped being about his chops anymore. It's about him being a part of something deeper, like the Beatles, Batman, Evel Knievel, Happy Days and Lavern and Shirley, and so on. EXCEPT: the Beatles were much bigger than all of those, and are still present in our minds and lives, whether we like them or not. Surely there are people who despise McCartney who still feel a pang in their hearts when they hear something like, say, Eleanor Rigby. I for one just get crippled inside when I hear something like "Jealous Guy" come on the radio. But then, I wore black the day after John Lennon was murdered, so I'm different. We can talk about magic here: the music the Beatles gave us was magic. How and why isn't really something to rationally discuss. It's like seeing a ghost. It can't be logically quantified. So here is why I think I cried when watching the video: I felt sad, just like you did. Paul is wistful, arrogant, proud, but in the same way my 80-year-old dad was last year when he died. I think that somehow Paul touches us *because* he saddens us. He doesn't have his chops. But Arthur, he doesn't have to. He has become, whether he wanted to or not, and whether he deserves it or not, something like our Grandpa pulling quarters out of our ears. And he's getting old and worrying about his legacy and acting rather human instead of some Superstar with the chops. The chops are gone, and a man is left. A man who was a member of the most famous band in the world, and lost it. A man who loved and collaborated with one of the most worshiped musicians in history--who was murdered senselessly on the sidewalk in New York. The husband of a woman he seemed to truly love, but lost to cancer. The husband of a money-grubbing harpie who tried to humiliate him publically through a divorce. The man who wears a face that he keeps in a jar by the door. Who is it for? I never cared for Paul's arrogance. But now that he is older, I think I can appreciate him in spite of it. He's just a man, after all. That's what we saw. Just a man. Just a musician. Just a singer whose pipes don't work like they did when he was 50 years younger. The question is: should he stop performing and recording? No. If he does, we'll lose something. We'll lose what it means to watch these people get old. We lost Jimi and Janis and Mama Cass and hundreds of others while they were young, and we lost a host of musicians in the last two years. Paul keeps rocking, with old pipes. And Mick keeps jumping around like a 20-year-old. And Iggy turned 70 and looks fitter than I did thirty years ago. These are our Heroes, Arthur. You're a hero to me, too. Just keep rocking and rolling, all of you. |

Oh dear, Arthur! You're getting into the stuff I hate: Sir Paul can't leave his legacy alone. He's always been a publicity hog, and always will be (I suppose), and he can't leave well enough alone.
The Abbey Road walk was kitschy and stupid. Playing at the Not-really-the-Cavern was even kitschier and stupider. I've never been a big fan of Paul or his attitude. (I was a John guy. ) My point above was that at some point, sometimes, some performers become bigger than the music. You, Arthur, just respect the music, and I respect you for that. If you ain't got the pipes or the chops, maybe you should quit. I agree. But NOT if you're Paul McCartney. Just for the record, I think Miles Davis made a lot of sh**** music before he died. But...well...you know...he *was* Miles Davis. |

Geez, Stone … and here I thought I was doing your a favor! Thought you’d be overjoyed! I wouldn’t have guessed by your first reaction (to the Carpool video) that you’d have anything negative to say about Sir Paul.
About Miles Davis and others: I still feel - no matter who they are - that there comes a time for everyone to hang up their boxing gloves. |
