From The Red Notebook by Tom Rose
Firstly, I have to mention that I have received Tom's notes from his giveaway for free. I will not get into discussing the price because whether you think it's too high or too low or is of course subjective. The notes consist of 6 short chapters: 4 full effects, 1 sleight and 1 chapter which outlines Tom's approach to false counts. Slow Motion Card to Pocket - This version of The Homing Card is simple, direct and authentic. Simple, in the sense, that it doesn't involve unnecessary additional phases or twist endings. You say what's going to happen and then it happens and that's it. This leaves the audience with a clear picture of what actually took place. Tom discusses the timing and movement related to every little moment in the routine very carefully Finessed Berg Palm - This is a small refinement of the original Berg Palm. Not much to say, other than that it's really good. I have seen Tom doing this move on a livestream. Or rather I've seen him take the cards out of his palm, because the actual move was imperceptible every time. Interestingly, this touch can be applied to other two handed palms and steals as well. The One-Handed Man - I have seen the same effect in the work of Ben Earl ("same" in the broad sense; Tom's description highlights and polishes some aspects and is overall more detailed) and in both cases I wasn't a fan of it. It's a "surprising" location of the 4 aces from a shuffled deck. Although I do not like the actual effect, I will be trying it out just to test out some little touches Tom has thrown into this chapter. The Invisible Cut - A beautiful move, a false cut that simulates a running cut from hands to the table. It's bold but it's mechanics are very simple which allows it to be done casually without paying much attention to what your hands are doing. Blind Spot - This is my favourite effect in the booklet. Tom's version of Twisting the Aces is nothing short of beautiful and is now my go-to packet trick. One thing I really love about this version is that every ace turns over in the same way, there is no difference in procedure between the phases. A fantastic effect. The Natural Count - This describes Tom's approach to false counts. It addresses many issues I had with the way those moves are usually performed and helped me identify flaws in my counts as well. Again, nothing is a better testament to the effectiveness of this approach than seeing Tom perform different false counts himself. Right in the introduction, Tom admits that "this style of material is not for everybody". If you expect to discover a completely new plot or a flashy new color change you will be disappointed. If you've ever said "It's good enough, laymen don't care" Tom's touches will most likely seem unnecessary. But I urge you to take a look at his work. What Tom concentrates on are the things so many of us overlook when performing. The descriptions of the effects are much more than just that. They are vehicles for great lessons in magic theory and presentation which can be applied to every single effect you already perform. There are some great lessons in misdirection and some really great ideas about scripting. There is a lot between the lines that will help you achieve that casual, natural style when performing. Whatever your skill level currently is, I think the lessons you'll learn studying and performing this material are invaluable. |
