Yesterday I went to a magic lecture presented by Fenik (mexican magician) in Juarez, Mexico. It was a very productive lecture since I got to learn a lot about Mexican magicians and their underground reputation.
The name that kept being mentioned was Baltazar Fuentes, who was compared to the great Dai Vernon, and was labeled as the Father of close up Mexican magic. Fenik, a very skillful magician and disciple of Mike Skinner and Larry Jennings even went on record to say that Baltazar was one of the best magicians in the world, but claimed that he was unknown due to his low profile in magic. Have any of you guys seen or heard of his magic? I'm very curious to learn more about him. I found some of his material on some websites and I'm definitely buying it. PS. Does anyone know if Ed Marlo ever mentioned anything about Baltazar?

I'm pretty sure Baltazar visited Marlo at the "Marlo Table" in Chicago. It may have been in the '80s.
I thought Coins of Ishtar was from Baltazar but it's DeBarros. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......s-magic/ Mike

Many years ago Baltazar made the pilgrimage to the Chicago area--took a job doing magic for tips at the Pickle Barrel Restaurant (in Evanston?)--just to be close to Marlo.
I don't recall the year, but I believe it was at the time period when "Richie Kaufman" was working for Harry's groundbreaking Apocalypse and Hanging Coins was brand new. Julie |

Yes. The Pickle Barrel was where the Marlo group used to meet. That's where I me Ed in the late '70s. What a great time that was!

I don't think I met Baltazar. I just recall being told that he had been at the table. As I recall, Marlo was impressed by his work. It's been a long time and my memory is pretty fuzzy about this visit. I'll bet Malone and some of the other guys who attended more frequently than I did would remember Baltazar.

I understand not remembering something that happened over 30 years ago.
Is Bill active on these forums?

I don't think Bill would be found on MC. I saw him in May at the Magic Pebble convention near Dallas. I'll see if I can think of anyone who might know a Baltazar story re: Marlo.

Dave Solomon and Simon Aronson would likely remember. But I don't think either of them frequent the Café either. I'll do some digging.

I have not seen Baltazar in MANY MANY years...but I do remember hanging out with him until around 4:00 a.m. at a TAOM YEARS ago. He killed me with his All Around Square Up Pass and then kindly sat there with me and taught it to me...I still use this pass all the time.
The other thing I remember was his rising card trick...early in the evening he would borrow someone's deck...have a card selected...card was placed back in the deck...and the deck in the box...the selected card would slowly rise out of the box about 3/4 of its length...he would then hand the box back to the owner. He was KILLING people with this as it was just too impossible! Then (for those that were REALLY interested and had the MONEY to buy it) he would have them (one at a time) follow him to his room...he would personally teach you the routine...give you his hand made gimmick...and swear you to secrecy! I think he was selling this for like $100 and this was MANY years ago. I remember that quite a few people went to his room to privately purchase this. I used this for my final years of restaurant magic...always fun when I had a magician at one of my tables...I would do this and just watch them squirm! Cody

I met Baltazar in 1976. I consider him my mentor and friend because without his tutoring, I would still be floundering in magic. I guess I studied magic with him for about 8 or nine years before loosing touch with him.
In my opinion, one of the best magicians I have ever seen or known. Jim Oliver

I met Balthazar when I did a magic lecture in El Paso during a long lecture tour swing. He is a fantastic magician with a beautiful touch with a deck of cards. He showed me an effect (which may be unpublished, I don't know) that is one of the best card tricks I've ever seen.
Balthazar is great. |

We had Baltazar lecture at the Buffalo Get-Together in 2000. I remember him being good but don't remember any details. I have a few pictures I will post if I can get them to work.
