This is my version of Gary Kurtz's wonderful routine "Trio". I set out to do it with three regular coins, no gaffs, no extras.
I hope you enjoy it and I would love to hear what you think! <---PRESS FULL SCREEN |

Looks ok. Love the story. The right hand is a little stiff or unnatural in some parts. Keep working at it.
Trio is one of my favorite routines to perform. I have been experimenting and performing with it for 23yrs. You did add some very nice touches in parts also I saw influences of Jeff Copeland thrown in there. |

You might pause for a beat when you pull the third coin out from the center of the two displayed coins. Also, try to keep the coins vertical. When they are tilted forward, they are not as visible. Maybe hone down the patter a bit. Otherwise, very nice. Some tough moves there, nicely executed.

Your videos are always inspiring and reflect the serious thought and effort that you clearly put in to your practice. Overall, there were some great touches and it was magical, but it still looks like you're having to overcome a lack of gaffs with at times, perceptible 'brute force' sleight of hand (e.g. some of the hand washes and transfers) - I wonder if a spec would pick up on this at some level. With that said, I'm certainly working on (more) un-gaffed coin effects now, as there are clearly some advantages and videos like yours and CMU help to motivate! Please keep up the good work and keep posting, Thanks Charlie |

Thanks for the good feedback guys. I will definitely work on smoothing out those areas. It's pretty difficult with a fixed camera to hide everything, but I'm always looking to improve!

When you tap the third coin in your left hand it is not clear what you are trying to get across. Looks like you grab it and add to the others. Good work, otherwise

I thought it was very well performed.
My only problem, and it's not even a real problem, is that you're wearing a black shirt, which is the best color for doing coin magic, but the wall behind you is white, and you keep turning to the side, and so the contrast between the coins and your shirt gets lost with the white wall-background. I hope that made sense. maybe it just looked like that because I was watching the video on my phone. |

Rick, that was really nice. "Trio" is a very challenging routine for me. One day I'd like to be able to get through it smoothly in performance.

I set out to do it with three regular coins, no gaffs, no extras. One of the things that strikes me interesting about Kurtz's "Trio" is how he uses the gaff. It's only used for the coins across phase and if you were going to perform this phase in isolation from the rest of the routine, you could do it with an extra, rather than the gaff. Where does your ungaffed/no extras come from? Is it a specific routine from someone else, an amalgamation of other magician's work, or something completely original to you? The opening production looks similar to something in on of Curtis Kam's "Palms of Steel" videos, using some of Kainoa Harbottle's edge grip moves. Your performance of it was very nice. Please keep posting videos or your stuff, Rick. It's both fun and inspiring to watch! Dave |

A lot of good comments here from some really good eyes with a deepness as to understanding.
I'm not big on long routines, but enjoyed watching you work this Rick. You certainly found good ways to eliminate the gaffs part of Kurtz' work, but as in most things, you sometimes find out why a guy as good at coins as Kurtz chose to use the gaffs in the first place. Sometimes you gotta go through the "more" of it all to figure out better how to perhaps get the most out of "less." It's a journey alright. But the routine was well-put and behind the story, the magic was nicely illustrated. While it was mentioned that perhaps that ROPS piece didn't work all that well, I particularly like that "Jeff Copeland" influence near the end as to that little finger-tap vanish...very pretty! As was that complete vanish sequence at the end, especially the hands open & up part...nicely done!

You've got a good eye to spot that opening sequence and it shows how well studied you are. Indeed, that is in large part taken from Curtis' production called "Riches from Rune" which he adapted from a Rune Klan production. The coins across is my own sequence with a couple of original sleights. The first is a steal during the opening display of the three coins. The second coin is just a heel clip steal I got from Latta. And the third coin is my adaptation of the ROPS move. And I have gotten Michael Rubinsteins blessing on that. This routine is one of three I have written up in a PDF that is ready to go. I'm just waiting for my buddy to get some free time. Maybe after I get back from Magic Live. I will keep you posted if you are interested. |

Rick, having tried Kurtz's Trio, I find your performance with all regular coins outstanding.
Achieving the same result with no s**** is something truly magical. I am looking forward to any PDF you decide to publish... |

Forgot to mention earlier Full Frontal Assault by Kurtz if you can find it. It was a predecessor to Trio and used ungaffed coins.

Rick,
I enjoyed your routine. Well done. I know this was filmed for magicians, but for laymen I would suggest framing it so your right arm doesn't drop out of sight, or if possible keep the right hand in the frame. Larry |

I appreciate that Degio! Will keep you posted on the PDF!
@Mobius, I do own that manuscript and conceptually there are a lot of similarities, but the main difference is it requires a downward point of view as opposed to things happening up at chest height. @Larry glad you enjoyed it. I chose to frame things a particular way. One, for visibility on camera, and two, to simulate natural misdirection that may not translate on camera. |

Have you ever looked into Kainoa's "Trifectas" booklet? I do not see it on his site anymore but he did just release a DVD on it. It contains 2 versions of Gary's "Trio" routine. http://www.magicofkainoa.com/shop/trifecta
