New blog is up. Here are my thoughts on scripting your magic. Do you script or just wing it?

I think a lot of magicians start out from the first trick that they perform as scripted. Usually it is a wonderful script too. All the right words in all the right places with great thought going into every word with its action.
Unfortunately, these magicians are using scripts that "they" didn't write. They are just going on autopilot, saying and doing exactly what Michael Ammar, Bill Malone, Doc Eason, David Roth... taught and said on the dvd. Am I guilty of this? Yes. I started out believing that the "script" was an intricate part of the "Effect" and because they "sold it that way" it was my right to use it - word for word. Then, as time went on, I got tired of the same old lines, the same jokes (that didn't have near the impact on my specs as Bill Malone had on his) and decided to take some advice that I somehow kept hearing but not understanding --- "Make The Effect Your Own". Now, I won't lie. A lot of what I do now, I am striving to "Script" or "Flow Chart", I have redone patter for many effects that were fine how they were learned, but I want to keep "MY Theme going as a "callback". I have been studying great books on scripting, showmanship, strong magic and designing miracles and Entertaining so I now see a lot "More" room for improvement than I saw in the past. For this, I am grateful. I am becoming a better version of "ME" The Magician. I also believe that some effects are perfect - just the way they are taught. But, just because the words I use at the times I use them are the same as the way I learned an effect, It doesn't mean I can't add a bit of my own style or personality into the mix. Does that make the effect better? Probably not, but it does make it different and that is what I am striving for. I moved around a lot growing up and even more as an adult. I have never been shy and never had a problem starting up a conversation with complete strangers and being "friends / good acquaintances" after a few hours. So, when I started performing seriously, I knew I could "wing it" and I did and it worked out fairly well for me. I can honestly say that because I had no idea how much better I could be if I did "Make it my own" and script not only each effects but additionally scripting the order in which I did each effect. Table hopping was different, You just need to pull out one, two, or three effects you do really well and you are golden all night. However, you better have a handful of newer effects every single week for those "regulars" who are going to burn you the second you lay down that different backed card in your Red Hot Mama / Chicago opener effect. By scripting, you can look back at the last few weeks work and know what needs switched up and what can stay. I also feel that I can be a pretty funny and entertaining guy (I earned some of my chops on the spot at the comedy club if someone cancelled. I was the fill in) I was also, like many others, the "class clown" growing up in school. One thing I have learned though, and you can take it for what it's worth. --- For every time I want to roll my eyes or just scream when "that guy" says "Can you make my wife disappear"? I think how the spectators must feel every time I say "Pick a card, any card... No, not that one"! or "I won't peek, I've seen this trick a million times" (*add any overused tired old line here*). Great Blog post Jason. Well worth seriously thinking about.

I think that many people wha claim to wing it are people who don't actually perform. How are you going to present a routine with nothing planned ? Like dean Dill said: always paint a clear picture. Hard to do that rehearsal.

I agree 100% with what Poof Daddy wrote. I have had a similar journey. "Make the Effect Your Own" should always be a goal.

Here's what I tend to do, write it word for word, run it through 3-5x , chuck the "Script" in a drawer, leave it for a fortnight, then perform the effect, the framework will be strong but have the spontaneity required of performance....
