Hi there,
I'm a father of an 8 year old who has recently started to get really excited about learning magic. I've always found that one of the best ways for her to learn things is for me to try and learn it with her, so I've been trying to follow a few online tutorials and I think I'm getting somewhere. At least the learning is enjoyable. She started off with a couple of self working tricks (do we call them tricks? I know most things have their own terminology, I assume magic is the same) such as a finger guillotine and pen through note, and I've just bought her a Svengali deck so she can get used to handling cards a bit more while having a trick that she can do straight off the bat. She does love that Svengali deck. So, I'm a learner, my daughter is a learner, and I hope we'll both get a lot better and still be here when we're better but still learning. |

Welcome beeblebear,
You are right to think your Daughter will do better with you along for the journey. Many Parents just get their child a Magic kit and expect them to know what to do with it. As I'm sure you've noticed, it is not so easy. Some Kids do it alone but they almost always need at least a parent willing to pick a million cards and make gentle corrections. I wish I'd started as a child. Tricks are what we do and props are what we hold. Dick Oslund can explain it better. Check out the "New to Magic" forum. Use the search to see if some of your questions have been answered before. You are in for some fun with your Daughter. -Mary Mowder |
