Hi all, i’m trying to find out is there any variations of out of this world that can be done without a table surface? I’m currently using Jon Allen’s executive decision from his Connection dvds but would like to learn if there are other variations of red black separation effects that can be done in the hands. Thanks!

Indeed! If you don't mind a small-packet version, "It's a topsy-turvy world, Jane!" It can be done in the hands with a borrowed deck. From yours truly. It was slated for an upcoming issue of Genii but it turned out to be a casualty of the Magicana editor shuffle. I'm figuring out what to do with it. It'll be in an upcoming book for sure, but I may try to release it as a standalone.

(Incidentally, the "Magicana editor shuffle" cannot be done in the hands with a borrowed deck. Take THAT, Genii!)

Now, I realize it may be unhelpful to suggest a trick that actually hasn't been published yet.

To make up for that...

Highlights... there are eight different references for small packet OOTWs, with one referred to as being in-the-hands. Unfortunately I don't know any of them, but it may be a good jump off point.

Now, I realize it may be unhelpful to link to a page filled with references to tricks with no further information.

To make up for that...

If it doesn't make you laugh, then you have bigger problems than finding an in-the-hands OOTW.

Thanks for your reply and sharing the link! Will have a look at the variations and see if I can locate any of it.

Roberto Mansilla has a standup version called "Outstanding". It may be worth looking into.

Full-deck separation is unwieldy in-hands.

Does Off World count? Doesn't require a table and it's an out of this world plot, though a bit different (and, I think, even more impressive if you don't mind a gaffed deck):

Joshua Jay has a variation of Jay Sankey's "Back in Time" which is designed to be an in the hands Triumph.

Josh's variation is excellent as it makes use of the Goodwin-Jennings display, which if you don't know it, is a convincer extraordinaire. You can find Josh's version on his Unreal DVD set.

I learnt his handling from his lecture but this is more of a triumph effect. I am looking more for a black red separation with a "mental" feel to it. Thanks for sharing too Smile

You're right, that didn't answer the question at all! I started thinking of OOTW effects, then my mind went to oil and water, and then I went to Triumph for some reason. Let's get back on track...

To make up for my faux pas, I extracted the information referenced by The Burnaby Kid above, and here it is:

  • Out of this World Variation (1977) Card Cavalcade Four page 99
  • Rouge et Noir (1979) Four Color Problems page 11
  • The Whole World in his Hands (1990) Apocalypse Vol. 11-15 (Vol. 13, No. 6) page 1799
  • Red Herring (1993) Rigmarole (Issue 3) page 32
  • Rouge et Noir (1996) Michael Skinner's Classic Sampler page 84
  • Red or Black - Which? (1997) The Card Magic of Nick Trost page 28

The Trost effect is one that uses a small packet that could easily be done by using another spectator's hands as a table. To get a quick feel of how it might look, you can hit the 3rd demo on this page http://www.magicbookreport.com/2011/05/t......k-trost/ which is called "Out of This World LITE". And just imagine hands where the table is Smile

Assuming the others may be able to be worked in the same fashion but I have no direct experience with them. Good luck!

I perform a version that is partially in the hands, it’s based off of Barry Richardson’s in Theater of The Mind. Might start there and see where it takes you.

This threw me off for a bit before I watched the clip (nice, btw). Coincidentally in the Oct '18 Genii, there is a Peter Duffie OOTW variation called "Offworld" (which is not in your hands). After reading the Genii trick, I now feel we missed out on Burnaby Kid's topsy turvy OOTW. Too bad they couldn't fit both tricks in the same magazine. Lynn

Huh. Weird. The Offworld I shared got a fair bit of attention when it came out not that long ago. Surprised that no one caught the same name...
