My Take: When I was a kid my father was a traveling salesman who sold paint and painting equipment. For some reason, his sales record was always first on the list. I didn't find out until long after he was gone that he had joined the local magic club back in the 1950's. I think he probably pumped up his sales by doing a trick or two for his clients. This book was actually put out by Avon Books in 1991 for $9.00. If you can find one online today, expect to pay around $40.00. It is that good. Bill Herz teamed up with Paul Harris to produce a magic book that is accessible to anyone. No sleights, no heavy lifting. Just easy powerful magic that they show you how to link to a business purpose. If you remember the early Harris books, you will remember the quirky sense of humor displayed. You will find the same here. I was recently contacted by Bill who told me that the book had been reissued in a new edition. Some of the tricks in the original were too dated and no longer worked in the modern office. Ones using flash cubes and desktop paper spikes have been removed and new material added. There is nothing here that will fool any of you but it will fool your co-workers and clients. Imagine how many sales people visit a buyer. Must be boring for the buyer. But if you come in and perform an amazing feat of legerdemain, you will not only capture his interest, but he will remember you and you might even make a new friend. There is some great simple magic in this tome. How can you go wrong with a book that opens with an effect by Max Maven? Quite frankly I was thrilled to see this new edition. The printing and binding quality are much better than the original. Mine is worn out and falling apart but I have kept it because it was a great book. Now I can replace it with the new edition. However, I will still keep the original. We have history together. When I went looking online for the place in which to purchase this, the only links I could find linked to expensive copies of the original, so I emailed Bill. Turns out the book is only available to his clients and friends but he gave me permission to publish his email address for anyone interested in buying the book. Bill has also put some videos online so you can see some of his magic. One of the videos is in his book. This is a good one to try the next time you go to Starbuck's with a friend. Basically a variation on the old two boomerang optical illusion. http://billherz.com/tricks/ As you can tell, this gets a heavy recommendation for me. Thanks Bill. It will have an honored spot on my bookshelf. |

I have the original edition, which I bought specifically for the Maven effect, as performed on TV. It's extremely versatile. I believe that this is the only source for it in print.

I like the idea on his site of using travel postcards with a mathematical force.

I learnt a lot from this book - I use the "Will the Cards Match" routine with business cards.

Canaday: Did Herz tell you where the new edition is sold? Searches of Google, Amazon and Herz's website don't show list. Thanks. DaveS

I was introduced to meet Bill Herz by David Williamson many moons ago, Bill is one the most generous person I ever met and he indeed is the one who introduce me mentalism for close up work at that time when not as common as nowadays.
Excellent review of the book, thanks again.
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.
