Recently I've been adding ym newly-learnt flourish (the Martin Lewis Spinner) to some of my tricks and well you know how people will always ask 'how did you do that trick?' I of course have to say 'magic!' but recently I've been asked 'how do you do that thing?' meaning the spinner. What should I say here? I can't say 'it's magic' because it's not and they know that, and if I tell them that I don't want to tell them, they may take that the wrong way. So shoudl I show them how the flourish is done, or does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep it for them? In a way it's part of the effect and I'd rather not tell them...
(This could also apply for flourishes such as the Cahrlier cut, but less so as they actually see how that is done.) Thanks, -Niko

I would not tell them. It's really no use explaining it to them anyway, seeing how most flourishes require a significant amount of practice to do well - and it's not as if you showing them how you did it is going to enable them to do the flourish, so why do they need to know?
I would probably answer with a joke... Q: "How do you do that move?" A: "A lot of lonely nights with a deck of cards" A: "Very well, thanks for asking" A: "No social life and no girlfriend, and you too can do these cool moves!" A: "I don't know - but it's cool, ain't it?"

Yeah, the "very well, thanks for asking" in an age old response to the age old question of "how did you do that?". I've heard it used in almost every magic show I've seen. some may think it's overused, but it's a direct, funny, and simple response to that constantly asked question.

Tell them either 1) you have a little "decknome" who runs around between cards doing strange things, or 2) you have a trained fleet of fleas (which you keep in your hair of course) that jump onto the deck and do all the "hard stuff" for you.

You are a little young to use my favorite -- "It's the result of a misspent youth."
Others that are good, though are "Years of practice and deprivation -- I'm totally deprived." And "It's a substitute for dating."

I usually say, " Any 10 year old can do it, (pause) with 40 years practice!"

My cards are satellite controlled, much like a GPS... I have no idea how these things work.

As a juggler, I often use a flourish in an effect (card or otherwise). When I am asked, "How did you do that?" I reply, "Lots of practice!" This is true, and it keeps me from going into a lengthy explaination. (After all, the spectator is not likely to go home and work on the flourish.) It also implies that I devote a lot of practice to my art, which is the impression I want to give as a magician.

Teach them how to do it, and maybe you'll help add a new person to the art of magic
