There was a magic shop in Vegas, and I believe it closed down in the mid 90's but I can't remember the name of the establishment.
There was a guy who used to work the counter there who wasn't a magician, but he knew his merchandise. He was also one of the few people who could manage the woman who ran the place. He later left to take care of his mother back east. Any information on either the shop or the guy that ran the counter? I'd like to hear some happy endings if anyone knows. Also...there was a cute girl who worked counter at the Lance Burton shop when it was still in the Hacienda--again, mid 90s. Is she performing anywhere these days? |

Wow, are you bringing back some memories. That magic shop was just part of another buisness....a party supply place I think. I was in the shop many times. Can't think of the name of the place off hand but I do remember both people of which you speak, especially the cranky old gal that ran it.
Maybe it'll come to me.... Ted (Leondo) |

The place was "Discount Party Store" A woman named Isabelle ran the place after her husband died. She was a relatively grouchy old lady, and didn't care much for the magicians who wanted to spend time there without spending *money* (Not that I blame her, she was there for the money, but it didn't help her PR image any)I never had a problem with her, and she was relatively pleasant to me, but I wasn't a magic store "groupie." I usually knew what I wanted, bought it and left.
This was before the current flood of "Houdini Magic" stores that are in nearly every major casino in the city. You'll have to describe the girl better than "cute." I remember one in particular, she was Philippino and her name was Mari. I believe she's still in Las Vegas, and doing fairly well for herself performing in several venues. Could this be her? David

Could that be Maritess, a Gary Darwin student (so was Melinda for that matter) doing her solo thing now? From what I here she's a very capable magus.

Last I heard, Maritess is in New York, and was not far from the WTC on 9/11/01. She sent a note to a dancer here in Vegas, and there was a very clear "numbness" in her tone that could come only from having been part of that terrible day.
I produced a show starring Mari a few years ago, and have worked close-up jobs where she was one of the magicians. In stage work, and in close up, Maritess has a very bright personality and style. And, she is nothing less than serious about her magic. But I don't know if she worked the magic shop at the Hacienda. Dunno, maybe she did. pp |

However the people that she had working the counter usually set a nice balance for her abrasive behavior. I wonder if anyone knows what happened to the bald Italian guy that used to work there...I was going to give him a Rory Gallagher tape (musician, not the comedian) and he went back to the East Coast before I got a chance to finish it. Actually, you've done a fine job describing her. Glad to hear her career in magic has gone well past the shop. Thanks for the information. |

A great side show type performer used to work there too named John Shaw. Big guy. He lives in NY now. Does the bed of nails, popcorn up the nose and tricks like that.
