Basically I would have to say that I am lame at fanning the deck. I need to fan the cards for many tricks that I have come across. One in particular by Ortiz where it appears the deck is blank. Any links and tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When I read your thread title, I thought you might be complaining about stalkers!
Anyway...For starters, it's easiest to learn proper fanning techniques if you have cooperative cards. Practice with a fairly new, broken-in deck. Cards from a brand new deck may be too slick and well-used cards may tend to stick together. If you are using good cards, then you may need to experiment with slightly different starting positions for your hands. This is one area where I found videos to be very helpful. The little nuances that made a difference for me were not written in books (In "Now You See It, Now You Don't," Tarr even states, "Hands vary. The precise grip for you can only be determined by experimentation.") or expressly addressed in the videos, but by watching Jeff McBride's card manipulation videos, I was able to see the difference between what he was doing to make his fans work and what I was doing that wasn't working. I highly recommend his series. Good luck. |

Sorry, but the answer is practice, practice, practice until you get it right. Even if you have the best possible description at hand, the art of card fanning doesn't come easy for most people.
Have patience and try again and again. Start with only half a deck. The cards should be in a good condition. Don't use a brand new deck, they are too slippery for most beginners. Sometimes while practicing, you will fan the cards perfectly and just don't know how you did it (quite an experience!). Relax, and try to remember your exact fingerpositions, the pressure, and so on. Sooner or later you will get the knack. I'm speaking from my own experience. Here are some sources, where you can find basic instructions: Royal Road to Card Magic, Card College (don't know which Volume), Routined Manipulation by Lewis Ganson and the Card manipulation Series by Jean Hugard. If you prefer videos, Mc Bride's Art of Card Manipulation would be a good choice. Good Luck and happy fanning Uli |
