Magic as therapy for building confidence... could just get you in trouble and a reputation as a tricky = untrustworthy person. And ... if you hold the mechanics over their heads as secrets... you are just alienating yourself further.
Step one ... understand that it is they who grant you the audience. It can help to know that 'magic' is a feeling. The magician does stuff to induce that feeling in the the audience. Chaning how people feel, for the better, is a non-trivial task and needs to be done with some care.

Do magic for whatever reason you want, but if you're interested in performing for others, I suggest that you perform what spectators like (as long as it fits your style). My guess is that you'll like what you perform because of the reactions.

I didn't say it before but since I got incorrectly quoted I will say it just to save face. Magic is just entertainment. That is it. Entertainment. You want to save the world and do something spectacular. Don't pick magic. It is all about entertainment. Without the audience that is entertained it is all just stupid sleights and cheap moves. When they are entertained it is magic. |

In the Walter Scott book this was discussed a little.
He said he new many guys (Doctors, lawyers) who practiced seconds and bottoms just for themselves. They never cheated or demonstrated magic. Check the book 'Phantoms of the card table' by David Britland.

You can practice tricks or routines all you want. the magic may or may not be there for you. If you perform for others, let them have the magical experience. They like that sometimes.

This getting very Zen...
If a magician does card tricks in the forest and no one hears him riffle shuffle does he make a sound? or What is that sound of NO hands clapping? Personally, I think is it is completely pointless doing magic without ever showing it to anyone. But people do odd things alone in their rooms so go for it. But don't criticize those magicians who choose to share their art with others and think more about others then themselves. |

You didn't answer that question in your first post. You may have given your opinion, but not an answer. |

If they like performing entertaining material, there is no need to perform material they don't like. If they don't like performing entertaining material, they will have to perform material that they don't like, because the premise is that they want to entertain people. To get back to the original thread, magic is not just about entertainment, that's true...dependant on one's perception and situation. if I'm doing a gig, I must do what I say I do...entertain, mystify, intrigue, engage an audience. Does an artist create for the sake of it? As a means of self expression, yes. To earn a living, yes. Can others appreciate it? Yes! and no! It depends on one's situation and the purpose. A paid/unpaid performance is as good and beneficial as the reaction one receives; inner contentment is a different beast entirely..

There is no magic without an audience. sometimes you can feel the magic when you look in the mirror, or imagine the experience from an audience perspective.
Still, what you do is a routine or trick... the magic happens inside the mind of the audience. A robot can perform a trick. If a robot does a trick in the woods, was there any magic??? I say NO. Even if filmed... the magic would happen when someone saw the film, and did more than just watch, they believed on some level... and that is also necessary for magic to happen.

Okay S2000! I'll do linking rings until my spectators and I throw up. That would be entertaining.
Yes you need to be entertaining to a spectator, but you don't have to perform magic that you dislike to achieve that. |

LBP Magic the last statement is intended at you at all. |

Of course no one should do something they do not enjoy!
However, if you spend you life doing things for Yourself and not trying to bring pleasure to others, you will soon find yourself a bitter and old with no one interested in who you are and what you do. Don't just do tricks in front of people, do magic WITH people! Bring them into your world and make them want stay and you'll never be disappointed! |

For the most part we are all saying the same thing. Yes you should entertain your spectators, but you don't have to perform tricks that you hate.
If me saying that I should do linking rings until my specator's or I puke offends you. Then I am sorry, but I was obviously joking. Sit back take a deep breath relax and crack a smile. If you don't see than I am joking then just ignore me please. |

It is fun give it a try sometime. You usually have to tie the spectator down for awhile to get them to watch the same trick that many times in a row.
