I pulled this in front of 70 people from the local computer club last night and blew them away!
I was demonstrating the "Reverse Phonebook" feature of Google, and worked my way around to the Charlotte NC area code: 704. I entered "7043781300" and up came the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. Then "7043362725" and back came the Charlotte Public Library. "Works with any ten-digit number that starts with a valid area code," I said as I walked past a wastebasket in the room. I casually glanced into the wastebasket, reached in and pulled out an empty Yoplait Yogurt container. "Hmmm," I said, "this is interesting. The UPC code on this empty yogurt cup is a ten-digit number beginning with 704!" I laughed. "I wonder whose phone number THAT is!" I handed it to a spectator and asked him to read it to me as I typed it into Google. He read it off: 7047000101. I hit "enter" and up on the screen came: "Yoplait Custard Style Yogurt, Royal Raspberry, 6 oz." I looked shocked and the audience came right up out of their chairs. "What an amazing engine!" I murmured. "Just amazing!" You can imagine the "How did you THAT?"'s that ensued! |

It worked with a Payday candy bar also.

No, 107 is not a valid area code. The UPC find works with any UPC Code, but the trick here was that, in an attempt to fool the Google engine with a seemingly legitimate phone number, the engine was actually smarter than anyone suspected and recognized the UPC code. It's truly an amazing engine: "25,000 computers all tied together with Velcro."

I just tried it with the first UPC code I could find, even though "107" is not a valid area code. I did not have time to ferrit up a code that matched an area code.
None the less that is an interesting find. Bill |
