Hello people, I have a good question regarding Paul Osborne's plans.
I have some of his plans and I say they are good, especially for a beginner to illusion, like myself. The thing is so many people are selling his plans and at $25.00 each. So far I have counted 9 plans. What I would like to know is --all of Paul's books 1 to 4 and his haunted house books contain plans, but are they the same as what people are offering large blueprints in their envelopes? If I buy all of Paul's books, that would that give me ALL his plans --that's a big savings. If so many people are doing this, where do they get the plans from in the first place? (They are nicely presented in the envelopes.) Or do they simple copy out of his books and send them off? Is Paul still alive? Who is Paul? And if he is alive, does he know that so many people are selling his plans? And lastly, (Sorry if this is going on too long.)it's a good business to do. How would I go about getting his plans and selling them for myself? One person I got the plans from says he has to order them. WHERE DOES HE GET THEM FROM? Please, could someone help me? I would like ALL his plans, but would cost me a fortune. Thanks rob |

I do believe you can go to Paul direct via the net. Too, back issues of Genii will have at least one effect per month... many, if not all of which make up the plan books.
Paul's perspective on illusion systems and their construction has helped many "beginners" but his books are easily found on the shelves of most all your big name builders and referred to with great frequency. In other words, his stuff has become a "standard" in many ways and his insight on base design (so as to add to deceptiveness) is a great boon to one and all. Plans selling @ $25.oo to as much as $200.00 aren't unusual (for a single effect). Though most such templates offer better detail, this isn't always the case. As I mentioned in another thread, many of the older retailers "cheat" and photo copies of older Thayer & Abbott plans weren't unusual... selling from as little as $5.00 to $50.00 (more, if the buyer proved to have the bucks and the desire to get their hands on things.) If you wish to buy plans that are accurate, easy to follow and detailed, be prepared to pay for them and go to reputable sources. Not all will sell plans but many of the top builders have a variety of designs they are willing to part with for a price... copies of their own shop plans drawn up by their own draftsmen, etc. I know this may not answer your question fully, but I hope it lends to you some insight as to how things work.

The plans that are in Paul Osborne's books are the same ones sold individually, but not all his plans are in his books. The two versions of the Thin Model Sawing in Half, come to mind, as well as the Mis-Made Lady illusion.
I have all of Paul's books and many of his "Genii" plans (which were once published in a book, which is out of print.) There are many Osborne plans not in a book so it depends on which illusion plans you want. Paul is alive and well in Texas. His company specializes in creating shows for theme parks. He does it all, from creating the show, designing the costumes, designing the illusions and hiring the performers. His book "Illusions - The Evolution and the Revolution of the Magic Box" has a very entertaining autobiography of Paul. His plans are sold by many because Illusion Systems (Paul's company) distributes his plans directly and also wholesales them to dealers. His plans are the easiest to work with and have the most modern designs. I highly recommend them. (I own several of the individual plans, such as the two Thin Model plans, the Mis-Made Plan, the Chests of Mystery, the Shadow Box & the Assistant's Revenge.) Michael |
