The U of K has produced some AWESOME card guys in the last ten years. Michael Vincent, Derren Brown, Guy Hollingorth, Colin Tilley... etc. Not bad for such a small country!
What I want to know is this: Who is bubbling under? Who is going to be ROCKING the magic world in the next couple of years. Post your predictions here guys! |

Colin who? Never heard of him. Perhaps he is still too far underground. And Vincent has been around longer than 10 years but performs very little original stuff.
The UK has also produced some pretty "awesome" card guys long before the last ten years... Predictions for 2 years down the road? 2 years from now you will have forgotten any I might mention, lol. Paul. |

What about Dick Emery and Roy 'Chubby' Brown?

Roy does an unbelievable "pass", but normally gets his face slapped.

Speaking of UK magicians, can someone tell me about Lee Davis and Sean Carpenter? Are they good?
|

Never seen Lee work, Sean is funny. He is also a customer of mine so has good taste. Also has a contribution in my book "Mindful Mentalism 3". Last year he won the IBM British Ring Close Up Competition and is a featured performer at next year's British Close Up Magic Symposium in Bath, a great convention hosted by Mark Leveridge. Details of that are on Mark's web page.
The combined symposium books in hardcover is also a good buy for close uppers. re; "Colin Tilley is from Cardiff" Thanks Phillip. I might have inspired him when I lectured there a few years ago then, lol. Paul. |

Thank you, Paul. I asked because I am thinking about going to day in Bath and haven't really heard of any of the performers. I was wondering if the two names I mentioned were any good as they are both competition winners and I am more interested in magic for laypeople rather than magic for magicians.

One name you will hear a lot about in the future is John Van der Put. This young guy has so much talent it's scary.

I believe he was in the same IBM comp. that Sean won last year, isn't that correct Jon?
Wade, Mark's day is always good. Highlight last time for me was Pit Hartling. For close up magic and great conditions for watching it is the best convention in the UK. Paul. |

I don't really think that the UK has a massive 'underground' card gathering, but here are a couple of guys that I love to session with... they're also some of the best close-up inventors I've seen in the UK.
Jamie Badman - He invented and published The Underground Change and performs some killer magic with it, along with a wide range of other brilliant moves/effects. Angelo Carbone - He's going to be one of magic's biggest stars as he's one of the most creative magicians in the world. I saw a prototype of his latest Tenyo effect a year or two ago and it totally blew me away. His Out Of Order has probably been ripped off more times than Ben Harris's floating match! Mark Pierce - He won't acknowledge it, but he has created some killer magic. He has some real gems that remain unpublished but totally fry every magician/lay person he performs to. Those are just three guys that come to mind - there are tons more... --Andi

"I don't really think that the UK has a massive 'underground' card gathering," We have creative people, but being more reserved we just don't go into all that "underground" hype. The term seems to be more of a marketing word in the U.S. Never seen Mark Pierce, Angelo IS incredibly creative and not just with cards. re; "His Out Of Order has probably been ripped off more times than Ben Harris's floating match!" I can only think of three other versions. I know he was upset with Peter Zenner and Bob King, and there was another U.S. version called "Spectacle" (not to be confused with the Phil Goldstein packet effect of the same name.)It's not so widespread it has made it into a Marvin's Magic set yet. Although I don't have a full count of rip offs of Out Of Order, I know that there is a LONG list of them. Angelo says that there are over a dozen. One rip off is far too many... five or six is just crazy. A dozen is insane!
If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, Angelo may feel extremely flattered! And, I know for a fact that he doesn't! --Andi

How come all the U.K biggies come from Glasgow?
Have you ever heard of someone the stature of Roy Walton, Peter Duffie, R. Paul Wilson come from London, or the North? |
Jon Allen V.I.P. England 1771 Posts |
I am not sure if John Van Der Put was in the IBM competition. What I do know is that he is one of the most creative and talented magicians I have seen in a long time. For someone so young, he is amazing.

Stefan, the original post asked;
"What I want to know is this: Who is bubbling under? Who is going to be ROCKING the magic world in the next couple of years." Which is why the established Scottish names didn't come up. R Paul Wilson is from Scotland. re; "Because Scottish people are better And people rom Glasgow get a first hand view of a living legend at work (Roy Walton of course)" Well the second part of that statement DOES have a lot to do with it. Roy Walton has been a great influence.Though he doesn't actually live IN Glasgow. Simply works in his shop there. I think Gordon Bruce's name got missed from the list of Scottish names. And Sadowitz. But to say; "all the top British card men come from Scotland. Actually, not Scotland itself but Glasgow." I must ask Peter Kane, for one, about his secret Scottish roots...lol.And Lewis Jones, Jack Avis, Roger Curzon, Roger Crossthwaite,Al Smith etc. Besides, I have it on good authority from the Scottish Mafia (a phrase originally coined by Bobby Bernard I think)that there is no such thing as the Scottish Mafia. lol This thread has wandered off topic and could probably be under a new heading "Scottish Mafia" Paul |

I mean people who would be in the class of Al Goshman, Johnny Paul, Don Alan and others.
But none of these where really Card Men where they? Maybe you just dont like card magic? Phillip |

I just thought,
Simon Lovell is quite an entertaining card man. Though after seeing him at the Bristol magic Convention last year I think he has lost it a bit since going to the US. I found Terry Seabrooke went that way too. Maybe it's just me though. Phillip |
