I just got a vanishing cane and it is obvious what happens because it retracts slowly. Is there some way that I can fix this. I am currently using Jeff McBride's technique to turn to the side, as opposed to performing it dead on. Is there anything else I can do.

Try using a black silk with the vanish. The cane will appear to visibly melt into the black silk. The contrast between the two shades of black is practically invisible, therefore a slow retracting cane will still look wonderful.

Do the vanish into the newspaper. It's better magic and it doesn't matter how slow the cane is. Fred Kaps' "saltshaker" touch on this was brilliant.

Maybe you have kept the cane extended for too long. Try not to do that. Keep the cane in it's "vanished" form. This will give it a longer life span.

Hi,
As you do the release, move your hand towards the retracting cane. Try it in front of a mirror to get the speed right. If the cane in metal, use WD40 on it. If plastic, fanning powder of spray furniture polish. Most Vanishing canes allow you to put a silk inside. Try that with a nice red 18-inch silk. Paula

Break it in by using it. Avoid over tightening the cane by twisting it to fit the cap once it's extended. Store cane in the vanished position.

If your cane is too slow, try this tip from the Fantasio video:
With the cane in the collapsed position, wind it as tight as possible, then put a few rubber bands around it, so it keeps that tight position. Then get a pan and put enough water in it to cover the cane, but don't put the cane in yet. Heat the water till it boils, then take it out of the fire, drop the cane inside and leave it there till the water is at room temperature again. DON'T put the cane in the water while it's still on the fire. When it starts to boil, take it out and then drop the cane in. Don't worry, it doesn't ruin the cane. As I said, Fantasio teaches this tip on his video, and it works wonder. Hope it helps. Alex

I'll try that.

Another method is to do it vertically (with the cap at the top, and ferrule at the bottom) instead of horizontally, until you get the knack.
Some even perform it horizontally, and then pivot their hand up while it is collapsing, so it collapses downwards. Let gravity help you. - Donald.

If you need to see the rotation of the cane for the vanish, look at my website for the video for Fantasio cane to bouquet.
