Hello Derren, I'm extremely pleased to have the possibility of actually talking to you, thanks to the Café, as you are one of the top performers I have seen even tough I'm only aware of your existence because of your books that I ordered on-line and your t.v series that were sent to me by a friend in the UK.
That said, I want to ask you what is your position on having a repertoire filled with magical creations of others, does that make you a worse magiccian ? Do you think those magiccians are in a way less than the actual creators ? I think I could probably create a couple of tricks, but they wouldn't be very good, so I prefer to learn from others and invest more on presentation and on slight differences. I also like to add as much humour as I can into my performances ( probably Sankey's influence ). Do you think humour has any importance in the presentation or in the strenght of the effect in itself? Or maybe even in the perception your spectators are left with after you end your performance ? I think your sense of humour is great, altough you don't really seem to need it, but I think that just changes from person to person, as I find it easier to be funny than to be mysterious. Last question: Sometimes, when I'm doind a trick I fell people respond to it as if I was just telling them an interesting story with a couple of funny events in it. What I'm trying to say is that many times I can't get people involved emotionally and feel interest and wonder and specially I can´t get that " leave them always wanting more " thing. Did you ever feel like this ? Any advice on this questions will be most appreciated. Your's faithfully, David D. |

Qestions for David D
Do you make it a piont to put a sence of wonder, interest and emotion in your vioce when your presenting your magic? Because if so your Audience should refflect that. Jay Sankey deals with the topic in his Zen and the Art of Stand Up Comedy. You should be able to find it in your local library or book store. Also how many effects do you perform in one setting? Do you have a strong closer? The art of Making them want more is stoping while your ahead. Hopefully that helped. Matthew Teague |

Well, I try to insert a sence of wonder and that I'm showing them something out of the ordinary, and I usually finish with the strongest trick. But maybe I'm not doing it right. I was already thinking about buying a book on comedy and all the other areas that, for example, Sankey's book covers ( the Zen one), I posted it on the food for tought room.I perform between 3 to 5 or 6 effects, depending on the place, time, disposition, stuff I got and probably reactions.
