Hi Derren,
I've always wondered your reasoning behind including 'mistakes' in your programs, I have to say I like them, but secretley I think you deliberately make the mistakes. So why do you include them in, and are they deliberate?! Thanks! -Nik PS - Will you be at the International Magic lecture again this year?

I think its like a tight rope walker... if you make it look easy and just walk along the rope quickly, where is the drama? You need to make it look difficult or fail sometimes so that when you do succeed it looks even more impressive.

I think it's to make the effect more convincing (like proof that he's really done what he claims) i.e. That chess 'mistake' he made...

The interesting thing is that the inclusion of deliberate mistakes could lead us to believe that any real ones are planned.
Performers in various genres have known for a long time that you won't get nearly as much appreciation from your audience if you let them believe that what you're doing is easy. Houdini, for example, would sometimes sit behind a curtain for minutes after making an escape, allowing his audience to believe that he was still struggling.
Slowly learning that life is OK
