Hi Everyone.
Anyone performs the shell game in carnivals for money? I'd love to hear your experiences. Michael |

Wouldn't that be running a con and cheating people out of money?

Yes, but it's a carnival, and the shell game isn't the only game in a carnival that cheats people.
There are lots of games in carnivals that do the same. Michael |

If you get riped off hear in the states, buy playing one of the real joints ie the joint is fixed so you CAN'T win call the police as this is illeagle. and most states have extra laws just to cover this sort of thing. I worked for a carny several times, and most of the joints are on the up and up. thay basicly use the same logic casinos use, 1 out of 20 win. the other 19 see that it can be done and try agan.
If you want to rip people off, that's cool but call it for what it is. I think it was Harry Anderson who did a 3 card monty busking show. the main pitch was 'I all ready showed you that I could have taken ALL of your monny so you may as well put some of it in my hat.' or some thing like that. actuly I was thinking about doing shells agen, "For deminstration perposise only" so any one have ideas or storys of "past" exployts.

I don't know of anyone that is working the monte or three shell game on a carnival these days. They are still being "played" on Canal St. here in NY.
In the old days, the shell game and monte where played inside the sideshow tent. I'll try to find time to write up some about this if people are interested. It's really fascinating the way they have been worked through the years. You might want to check out the Sideshow Central website as I think there is a bit about grift on the midway to be found there. As for the rest of the games on the midway, a number of them are played straight with no gaff. The secret is that they are very hard to win. It's very hard for the police to close down a gaffed game as they are often a two way joint that can be played both straight and crooked. In general, if you see a game on the midway that has only very large stuffed animals as prizes and/or the game is run by someone over the age of forty, keep walking. You ain't gonna win there. |
