I just bought a 9V remote controlled confetti cannon launcher. It uses a glow plug wire to ignite flash cotton. I am concerned with the glow plug wire. I want to have some spare wire just in case I break it. Where can one obtain this type of wire? It is not as thin as a lightbulb. Is this available in an electronic or hardware shop? Or can I extract this by breaking a particular lightbulb? Many thanks in advance.

Try The Manufacturer or a Electronic Supplier. Don,

You've obviously done this before! When I'm feeling really cheap, I just break flashlight bulbs (but not the filaments) and use them as one-time glow plugs. When I have time, I buy spare glow plugs from TheatreFX, available in 1.5 and 3 volt sizes for $3.50 and they last quite a while.

Another emergency igniter is available at any hobby shop or Walmart and that is used for model rockets. They come in a 5 pack and have a small amount of flash powder on the tip to give a reliable ignition. They are one timers though.
The actual wire you speak of is called nichrome wire. You can get it in a roll at hobby shops too. It will heat red hot with as little as 2 or 3 volts. http://www.unitednuclear.com/wire.htm

I've tried breaking a light bulb, doesn't seem to work. Without the right gas enviroment, I don't think it will light up.. right?

That is very true that you can use a modelrocket ignitor, but if you want the real thing it is called nicrome wire and is arailible through theatre effects.

Nichrome wire is used in a lot of heating elements.
The glow plug are used in gas powered models to run the engine. Most hobby supply company can fix you up with the actual glow plug that you can simply screw in. The model rocket ignitors are good for flash pots.

Well, I just discovered something new. Yes, nichrome wire or Estes ignitors are best for flash powder, and no, the broken flashlight bulb I use for other powders does NOT work with Chemafex Ltd. B-white Chemical flash powder. It took me a while to determine that the aluminum or magnesium powder in the product shorts out the filament supports of the bulb so that the filament never lights! So much for being a cheap guy...

Why don't use tape a spare glow plug on a side of the canon and replace as needed. I think it is much easier and more safeer. By the way, can you tell me where did you get your 9v remote canon? I am looking for one too. Thank you.

Hi Ken,
I got my remote controlled confetti cannon launchers from the Shenzhen Convention in China last year. It is made in Taiwan. These are the guys who also manufacture those flower umbrellas of different sizes which Fukai sells. Each of the units have double barrels in a "Y" position. I was able to get two units at US$200. It is operated using a common doorbell wireless remote. It is powered using flash cotton. Lou

Thanls Lou. I am trying to build my own remote using wireless doorbell also but so far I haven't successed yet because I can't find a correct relay to modify it yet. Hopefully someone here knows what I am talking about and shed some lights in for me.
