Give eBay a shot to pick up some cheaper stuff first to make sure this is really what you wanna spend LOTS of time and money on...

Try ellusionist.com that's where I bought my first street magic video and it was very helpful. Prices are kinda high depending on what you buy but the videos have good info.

Also Hank Lee's Magic Factory is a great place to start. That is where I purchased my very first effects. You can visit them here http://www.magicfact.com

Invest in books, Royal Road to Card Magic, and Modern Coin Magic. These are great books. You will learn a lot from them. Also try to find local magic shops. Pengiun is not a place to shop.

Beware auctions on Ebay!!! One thing about certain magic effects (like the time machine e.g.) is that they are easily busted, and all ebay will care is that it's a functioning watch. Yes, you can get tricks for a lower than usual price, but youre running a risk of receiving a chop-cup with a loose, rattling gimmick, or an invisible deck which has lost it's cling.
I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Penguin, but all my stuff from them is fine. Hank Lee claims he'll best anyone's ad-price, but I've never tested that claim. Now for the info you REALLY need..... On approaching people: There are a number of good threads to check out on this subject, many in here, and a few in the 'sidewalk-shuffle' busking section. My 2 folding cents-->Look for couples (and have a romantic effect ready), or foriegners (theyre always willing to experience U.S. culture in ANY form), and especialy children. Kids are the achillees heel of a prospective audience, they have none of the 'stand-offisness' which adults have. When you spot a good 'target', follow along with them for a bit, listening to what theyre saying to their freinds, and wait to hear something which you can play off of. One of my fave approches is to wait untill a kid walks by wearing those shoes with the blinking red lights, then walk up and say "Excuse me, but you dropped one of your lights back there!" And 'replace' it using the D'lite. On what tricks to have: In street magic, the name of the game is mobility & adaptability. Have tricks which can be carried & concealed on your person. Some of the more usefull ones would be 1)a deck of cards (duh) 2)invisible deck(a top-10 winner![see the "and the winner is" thread]) 3)an ITR device (Spiderpen or hummingbird reel are the best!) 4)a TT (and know the visibill routine) 5)D'lites & ballerina hank & sponge-bunnies (for the kids) 6)Stealth-pen(another top-10 placer) 7)The raven (Not one of my faves, but others swear by it, and it's in the top-10) On what books / vids to get: I honestly can't say personaly, but from what I've seen & heard in here, the Cellini & Gazzo ones are miracle-workers Go get 'em dude!

At the expense of hijacking this thread...
Acting from pure ignorance I recently purchased a couple of items from Penguin Magic and found their service to be impeccable. Very impressive indeed. If they have been guilty of theft (and I take your word on it) then a boycott certainly makes sense, at least until they ammend their wicked ways. Out of curiosity; has this been brought to their attention and, if so, have they corrected their behavior? As business people with a finite customer base it would only make good sense that they did. And pronto. But I'm telling you, the service was admirable and that speaks volumes... We return you now to your regularly scheduled thread already in progress... |

Oh yes, believe me, they know about it. It's not necessarily Penguin, but one of their suppliers. It's unfortunate that Penguin chooses to sell their products, claiming they're doing us a "service" by offering cheaper alternatives.
You can buy a "Rollex" watch on a street corner. Are they providing us a service? Do you think Rolex cares? Do we sit by and just say "It's going to happen, what can I do about it?" and then do nothing? People are doing something about it. Penguin promises change, we'll just have to wait and see if they follow through. To get this back on subject, if you find something you like, on Penguin or somewhere else, do some research, find out where it comes from, and support the good guys. There are dealers that go "above and beyond the call of duty" and some who don't. Support the originators. If they have an exclusive with a dealer, use that dealer. For me, if they sell directly I'd rather all the money go to them instead of having to split it with a middle man. Go to "Good Bad and Ugly" and read the comments there. Read the product reviews. If anything is worth buying, I'm positive people here have talked about it.

Greetings and Salutations,
Start with Jim Cellini's excellent "The Royal Touch," it's a little hard to find but well worth it. If video is more your style, get his "Art of Street Performing I," for tips on gathering, building, and leading an audience to the all-important climax of your act -- getting them to put their hard-earned bills into you hat; "Art of Street Performing II," for some of the best magic you can perform on the streets to earn those hard-earned bills; "Art of Performing III," for some great insights from a variety of magi who make their livings on the streets; and "Magic that Can Be Performed Anywhere," for even more routines to round out your shows. Then pick up everything you can find by or about Gazzo, Jeff Sheridan, and Whit Hayden, and you will have the grounding to perform anywhere in the world, taught to you be some the acknowledged masters of the streets. Oh, yes, and get "The Secret Art of Street Magic," a killer book stuffed full of great advice. But mostly, track down a copy of Cellini's book, get some sponge balls, rope, silks, a handfull of coins, some linking rings, a TT, a cups-and-balls set, and magic stick and you'll be on your way. Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun playing in the streets. Joe in KC Live a great adventure, make magic happen, have an interesting life! |

Ulysses--
With all due respect, I think you are talking about busking, which is vastly different than the "street magic" all the kids here aspire to. Cellini and Gazzo = buskers Blaine and C. Angel = "street" |

Give Ebay A look.
But also look into some education as well. I find ellusionist.com pretty good. Good Luck <>< |
