Getting ahold of "The complete guide to restaurant and walk-around magic" by Kirk Charles is a good start

After that, plan on a lot of persistence and a bit of luck.

Another, great book is Jim Pace and Jerry MacGregor's Restaurant Workers Hand Book. Bill Malone also some great advice on getting restaurant gigs in his video/dvd series 'On The Loose'

Just hit the street and look at every place. If it is a chain or not. The most they can say is NO!. And that won't hurt any. The more places you hit the better chances you will get your complete week full. The week end is where most of them will want you. You will get some people who have kids eat free on Mondays. Sell it! The kids have parents and parents have money. The more you are out there the more private shows will come your way. That's where the money is any way. Well that and trade shows. Jim Pace's book covers every aspect of working in a restaurant. It has much more thinking than just that thou, It is truely a good buy.
Be true to your art, and it will be true to you

My current lecture notes, Real-Life Table Hopping, open with the issue of How To Get The Job.
Bottom line is -- well, why do you think I'm selling the notes! If interested, e-mail me and I'll send you my e-mail flyer. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Quote: True, that will eventually work, but it is hardly the most efficient use of your time, and you may end up working a place you won't like. Or that has bad food or bad service, whcih reflects on you. Personally, I wouldn't want my name attached to just ANY restaurant.

Look for places where you think you'd LIKE to work, where there is a good business, but not necessarily super-busy. Start with those. My virtually foolproof method for actaually getting the gig is detailed in one of my "Pro-Files" columns in the Bonus Section of my new coin book, Profiles in Coinage.

Impress the manager and tell him the benefits of his customers knowing that they will be amazed everytime they come to your restaurant!
Cheers, Logan
