I keep the wax on top of the cap. No one has noticed it yet...one would have to be extremely observant or excessively suspicious. The only problem I have had with the wax on top of the cap is that after removal there is a small residue of wax. This makes the cap slightly tacky. During practice, the cap came off as it stuck slightly to my thumb when I turned the motor on. Now that I am aware of this potential problem, I just take a little extra care.
I suppose that you could place the wax on the side of the pen below the opening to your pocket. This is where the wax goes on Sorcery Mfg's kevlar pen reel. |

Nick,
I was missing the spare spool also. One other tip (which I think has been posted in another thread) - always take the battery out when not in use. The cap easily operates 'in transit' and so every time I came to use it, there was no power. I've been through 3 batteries in a week (and only 2 performances!).

Where and when did you get it? When they were first released they did not come with an extra spool.

I purchased mine from Yigal immediately after they were released. There is a little cap on the bottom of the pen. When you uncap that, there is a spare, empty spool inside the compartment. All three of my pens have this.
When you are not using the pen, unscrew the top part of the cap from the base of the cap slightly. This breaks the electrical connection and keeps you from turning the pen on in your pocket. If you don't like having the wax on the top of the pen, attach it to a shirt button. Just be careful how you move your hands.

I've emailed hocus pocus, where I bought it from about the missing spool of thread, I'll let you know what they say about it, and if they will replace it.
Interestingly, the pen package was slightly open and inside on the instuctions there was signs of "editing". Someone with a black pen and change the "-" sign to a "+" indicating how to insert the battery. Do you think this could be related to the missing spool of thread?

Yigal did that before sending them to HP.

The packaging actually states there is a spare spool with the pen, but mine was absent. In fairness, I haven't written to them to complain as it kept slipping my mind. It was only when I saw it brought up in this thread that reminded me.

To Nick23 and Multiply..
When you receive the Spider Pen is is already loaded with one spool. The extra spool that you are talking about is hidden in the secret compartment at the bottom of the pen. Simply pop this out and you will see it. There should be a diagram of this in the instructions. I hope that this helps you. Best Regards Paul Gross Owner Hocus Pocus |

Wow, is my face red!!
Huge apologies to Paul and thanks for the (better) explanation. It is there. I was looking in the actual end-cap (screw-on bit) I am stupid. *Crawls into a hole out of embarrassment and does not re-emerge until 2005*

Be careful leaving the pen untwisted slightly to save the battery!I picked it up the otherday and the writing point of the pen shot forward shooting the top half of the pen across the room!I now have no black button cap to push to turn it on.It also leaves the spool of thread exposed in top of pen.If you leave the pen untwisted to save battery put a piece of tape on top of cap or take battery out when not using it.No I never found the plastic cap.

Hey! I ordered the pen on Wednesday, after drooling over it for several months. I haven't gotten mine yet, but I can't wait to start experimenting.

Is the spider pen supposed to replace an ITR or do they have seperate uses?
|

Nick23 Special user England 580 Posts |
The spider pen is a motorized ITR. The only main difference I can think of is that with a regular ITR, the more thread that is out, the more tension the line is under due the increased number of twists in the elastic.
The spider pen will maintain a constant tension no matter how much is extended. BTW, HP have offered to replace the missing spool. Thanks again.

I have to say that the idea is fantastic but the quality was a real let down. would rather have paid double and been able to change the batterys without it splitting. I used it once and will have to bin it now.

What split? I don't understand.
If its the cap that holds the battery in, throwing the pen away just because of that is a bit hasty. Im sure even me, with my extremely bad DIY skills could make something up that would replace it.

Yes the cap split, my point is I shouldnt have to start messing with a prop fixing it when I have used it once. a metal pen or the same pen with some metal parts would prevent this. I still think its a fantastic idea and prefer it to my U.F.C. just wish it was better made.

Nick23.. I had a similar problem. My pen arrived open and scattered in the box. I almost through parts out accidentally. The thread on the main reel was snagged and twisted and I had to remove it but the spare was fine and I have since respooled the reel with a stronger thread. The metal clip on my pen was broken as well. I was a little disappointed because too me, it seemed Like HP just through it in the box regardless of the fact that the package was open. That tended to steer me away from them since. But, I never complained so I really cannot say much as I was advised that I should let HP know and I just never did. I used epoxy to glue my metal piece together and it works okay, it just does not "clip" my pocket very well. Sometimes the thread will snag on the glue and break. Overall I think the product is good but feel as if I got a "used Product".
