Anyone tried adding lasers to your stage routines? Either as part of an effect or for stage lighting or dramatic effect.
Also if there is anyone here that is familiar with laser lighting. I know some can make diffrent pre-programmed designs, but is there one that will allow me to created an animated face who's mouth moves? In other words are you only stuck with the pre-programmed designs or can you create your own (and animate them, even if only slightly) |

If you're willing (and able) to spend enough money, you can create just about anything with the proper laser equipment. The cheapest high quality laser (in my opinion), runs about $35,000. Or you could always get the $150 special and deal with it.

Na, I'm not looking for a cheap one. But I am looking for one that I can program. Specifically, a giant talking head, the rest I'm pretty sure would be fairly stock..starfields, planets and stuff.

The ones that you can program are very nice indeed. We have had a guy open for us once that did some pretty cool stuff.
Several things to think about... First, the strongest ones use single or three phase power. You will need to tie a distros in or have the venue provide that. Some that are still quite strong do use less power. Second...they run very hot and use water to keep them cool. You will need a garden hose hooked up at all times while running to keep them cool. There are also air cooled ones as well. Below are two links...one that sells them, the other that provides them for events. See waht they use and how much they go for. http://www.lilaser.net/custom.htm http://www.lasertainment.com/ Best of luck!!! Kevin P.S. this one has the custom graphics you are looking for. http://www.lasertainment.com/fairs.htm

Also bear in mind that once you get over a certain power level you will be required to get a variance at most places you will play. A laser, like the kind you are looking for, will need a variance nearly every time you use it. It may not be worth it in the long run.
I'm sure the guy who opened for Kevin was packing papers. You just can't go trouping three phase, air cooled, lasers around these days without someone keeping track of you. Ms.M

LOL..very true. Thanks for adding that very critical part, Morgan. I forgot that anything over I believe 4.9 watts requires licensing and certification. You can blind someone in less than a second.

Very pricey, but would be worth it in the long run, if you perform a lot of shows.

Hi all,
I being an Event Manager, work a lot with Lasers. http://www.tarm.de is the site of the world's best laser guys and also the most expensive. Lasertainment is cost effective. What you need for the animation is just one 10 watt full color argon laser. I will be using this to launch a debit card this month. P.M me if you need more info. I can also e mail you a clip of the futuristic face which we programmed for this. The best thing to do would be to hire them on a per show basis. No point in buying the stuff. Just my HO. Cheers |

In my day job, I write 3D cutting software for 4,000 watt industrial cutting lasers. We can cut through 3/4 inch stainless steel at 240 inches per minute. They start at about half a million bucks each.
Imagine the routines I could do on stage with these big boys --- Guy |

Amazing things can be done with lasers. I recently attended LDI in Vegas and saw things done with lasers that blew me away. For example, the MC at the laser show was a laser projected, computer generated lightning bolt. The operator sat with a headset mic (for the voice) and he wore computerized gloves and each move of a finger or whole hand adjusted one of the characteristics of the character. It was truly amazing. They went on to project FULL COLOR animations that were elaborate as your average cartoon. The main muscle ehind it all was the JenLas Whitelight from Jenoptik Lasers. The housing that contains the diodes (all 12 of them!) is about the size of a small refrigerator because it must not only create 12 different laser beams, but also be able to keep itself cool! Which if you know anything about lasers, is not an easy task. The actual projection however comes from a small, shoebox-sized container. The two are linked with a 1/8" fiber optic cable!!! This means that you can have laser projection come from nearly any prop, or illusion as long as you can run the tiny cable to it. I am not sure about your price range, but I would guess that this machine is not in it. However it is REALLY COOL!!!! http://www.jenoptik-los.com

Sometimes I use lasers with fog and it looks awesome.

Yes fog (preferably haze) should always be used with lasers (and moving lights for that matter).

I think that lasers are cool, but I prefer my Inteligent Lighting better.

Hey Nick I saw that system used about five years ago at LDI in Orlando. It was brand new and had many bugs... that's cool to hear it is up and running. Did Lemaitre do their Pyro demo this year and id so what did you think?
Thanks, Fitz P.S. I used to do all of the Theatre Effects Trade shows and now Perform almost fulltime, I fill in the rest of the time with Audio, and Lighting gigs in Arizona.

Lasers are...as noted: awesome/audience pleasing/potentially dangerous/legally entangling/water dripping bits of extraordinary technology! I Love em!! I have had some special pieces developed for my show by award wining laserist Tim Walsh. His company is Laser Spectacles in San Marcos, Texas. My highest recommendation on any laser related issue to Tim.
Ed Opps! Forgot to add this to the first post..sorry.. *If you want to see some laser work incorporated into a show as well as some pretty nice blacklight work, check out Lazer Vaudeville. Carter Brown's troupe has combined these elements on stage for years. If you cant see them live...get thier video. Not much real "magic" per say, but lots of imaginative staging with the various technologies. -Ed
