I have helped a few people with this issue. One positive and very helpful thing to do is to study * and practice * breathing techniques. I could recommend books but everything you need is out there for free on the net.
Controlling your breathing will help your stutter and also your stage fright / nerves etc. Also perspective (i.e. I don't HAVE to perform for these people, I GET to perform for these people), rehearsal and material knowledge is a primary key too. Hope this helps. Bri. |

I'm also of below average height and don't get offended at height jokes, in fact I have some of the best 'short-jokes' around. I have to reach UP to type this right now, in fact. A few people have mentioned Bargatze in here. Steve is an excellent example of incorporating speaking difficulty into an act with great effect. My choice was to work THROUGH the difficulty as opposed to working WITH it. I'm not saying that mine was the superior decision, it's just what worked for me. I was also inspired by Jonathan Pendragon. He has a speech problem that he has worked hard to master and has done an admirable job.

I took one of my teaching classes, and one of my group partenr had a svere stuttering problem. For a teacher this can be a disaster. to make it worse, his parents, haaving no clue he would grow up to stutter, named him cyril. He always got stuck on his own name.
What did he do? He wanted to be a teacher. He opened his classes by announcing that he stutters. After a few days the kids stopped making fun of him and stated to learn from he. His speech impediment did not prevent him from being a good teacher. As to your friend, he probably shoudl try to avoid the words that really catch him badly, but otherwise on with the show.

I knew a guy, very bright and he had a bad stutter when he spoke. But when he sang he never had a problem. If it's the same with your friend he may be able to use it. I used to see a guy at the Comedy Store in Westwood (closed years ago) who played the guitar and sang hilarious lyrics like Jack Black in Tenacious D. Adam Sandler sings some great stuff too. Ask your friend if he stutters when he sings. Hope this helps, Rick

There is an old trick for stutters that works too often to ignore. That is rhythm!
Put a metronome that speaker can hear nearby. You may be very surprised at the result. Stuttering frequently goes away. Try it. I always shake while I'm being brave. Bob Magic By Sander |
