What is everyone’s suggestion on good beginners material to learn The Cups and Balls? I've look about but there is a lot out there and, as most people, do not have the time and funds to check them all out. Of course, thank you in advance for your time.

Try "Ammar's Complete Cups & Balls"
You can either buy the book (around 40$) or the DVDs (there are two, Vol.1 and Vol.2 - to start with, Vol.1 is enough) Magixx

He goes into a lot of depth about the trick, misdirection, timing and it's all super valuable information to have. Not only will you learn the cups and balls, but you'll end up learning at lot of other stuff that will influence any other magic you do too. Honestly, I didn't even LIKE the cups and balls until I saw him do it, and I learned more from the tape than I can even tell you. Good luck! Let us know what you decide to do, and how it turns out, okay? Wendy

The routine I do is base on Raphael Benatar's routine. It is very good, but I'm not sure it is good place to start. My suggestion is to learn the routine in the Mark Wilson Course in Magic. It covers all of the stages of a basic routine and is very performable. After you are comfortable, you may want to look at Dai Vernon's routine and others. Be warned! You can become obsessed with the cups and spend a lifetime learning with them!!
Have fun, Richard |

My tip is for the Ammar vids/DVDs or the book (volume 2 has some advanced work, but if you decide you like the effect it's a MUST)
You can learn some basic penetration moves (non sleight) sequences from even kids magic sets and there is some interesting stuff in Hoffmans modern magic on the cups, though the presentaton needs updating considerably. Joseph did some great work in the 50s/60s on the effect and there is much literature from that era if you look for it. Basically get as much info as possible from different places and learn how different performers adapted it for themselves. It's a huge subject, but after learning many of the basic concepts you'll be abe to look at a routine by a pro and work out much of what is going on. |

Start with the Mark Wilson routine. Not only do you get a great routine for Cups and Balls, but you get the rest of the book with lots of great magic in it. Plus, you can find it for about $20. The price is right.
After that, try Ammar's book. He has several routines and a wealth of moves and sleights to keep you busy for a long long time. |

I concur Ammar 1&2 are awesome, but don't stop there. There is a veritable fount of knowledge to be had, many magic books have neat little tricks for that effect. So basically what BlackShadow said.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Greetings and Salutations,
I concur with Sean. Go with the Wilson book, it has a good routine and a wealth of other magic in it. That way, if the cups are not for you, you still have a great book with loads of magic. If the cups are, indeed, your cup of tea, then by all means get the Ammar videos and books. After that, the sky's the limit. Happy hunting. Joe in KC |

I started out by learning the routine in Mark Wilsons book and have performed it for the last couple of years. I have extended the routine with ideas from Michael Ammar, John Mendozza, Charlie Miller, Mike Rogers, and many great people on this forum. I recommend that you do the same. Learn a routine that will not require months of practice to make work, then spend your time polishing it and tweaking it. The process will be ever ongoing.
Enjoy! Mike

When you are working out the routine, feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. The cups are a favorite of mine and I love to share ideas.

You've gotten great advice so far. Mark Wilson's book is simply great. Ammar's book should be next (when you have the money). Then there is the L&L Teach-in that features four people doing cups and balls.
There, that should keep you busy for a couple of years. |
