Hi David,
The last year or so, I have really started trying to make all the magic I do a part of myself. Say you really want to do a certain effect but don't have a presentation that fits your style? How do you go about creating a presentation that fits YOU? Thanks for the magic!

What a good question.
For me, there's no easy answer, but there is an easy beginning. I TRY an approach to the effect. It might not end up being the final solution, but it's far better than half-hearted measures. Most people don't even try - they serve up what's been served up before. By MAKING A CHOICE, not necessarily the right choice, but a clear choice made for a reason (a desired outcome) progress is always made. At the very least, if things go poorly, one can eliminate a possible option. At best, it works, or, with tuning, becomes something that works - then you have a unique version of a trick that you can do for the rest of your life. With the cups and balls, as I posted before, I worried the plot for a year before I had a wrinkle that I thought I could call my own. In my coins through table routine "Clearly Impossible", I talk about taking the subway into Boston, to the big libraries, as a kid, where I learned what they are about to see. This frames the presentation and gives it some context. For my traveling wedding ring effect, I discuss a late relative who was a romantic, and create a mood. So, my advice couldn't be simpler: Try something. Make a clear choice, execute it, and evaluate the results. It's not hard to come up with possible options. We think options are infinate, but that's not so. Do you want the trick to get laughs, gasps, shouts of surprise...start with a desired expectation not just for the trick, but for different moments within the trick, and work from there. |

That is EXCELLENT advice, David, that even us "old-timers" in magic sometimes forget. Thanks!
