You may find my iPhone/iPad app, Symbolic Method, useful as a practical tool to script and document card tricks. This approach, entirely based on Juan Tamariz "método simbólico", is the most straightforward way to x-ray the technical elements of card tricks. It is to card magic what musical notes are to music.

The latest release of Symbolic Method and the free Symbolic S-Up demo version finally support Actions. While the initial releases focused on position checks and the app's architecture (adding grid views, modularization, structure boxes, bluetooth document sharing, multiple copy/paste, info- and filter management, Card Maps, ie. a coordinate system to orient through cardmagic land), now the user can formulate actions such as 'cut at 10H', 'palm the top card', 'triple turnover showing 5C', 'deal the top card to right side of table', and much more. The underlying framework is flexible, and it can be extended through the settings panel. There is more to come.
Symbolic Method addresses those of you who always thought that words aren't precisely the best way to express the details of a 5 card setup stack, or the macroscopic structure of a card trick. It helps you focus on the essential elements of a trick, and to easily remember it's outline at a single glance. No other development in card magic has ever offered anything remotely close to it. Tamariz' 'método simbólico' is the most practical, the most efficient way to read card magic, and the Symbolic Method app is it's unprecedented realization on mobile devices. Take it with you whereever you go, crypt up ideas when travelling in a plane or train, pin down the key elements when reading the books or watching the videos, modify, correct and finetune as you get along, be precise, consistent, colourful and see the beauty of concise trick patterns. |

Symbolic Method also includes Card Maps. Card Maps represent a 'visual index', and serve to graphically represent one's entire repertoire as introduced on http://yeahgic.com/Pge_card_maps.htm. This goes beyond Tamariz' vision for a notation system but the Symbolic Method App serves as an ideal platform to realize the Card Map idea in praxis. Ideally, every compilation on card tricks should help the reader spot the 'coordinates' of the tricks described; every book, every teaching video or magazine should position its individual pieces on a map to the benefit of 'smooth reading' or 'smart consuming'. Students would be able to quickly spot the big picture, the diverisity of the collection, and identify which ones to focus on. Tricks with interesting, very creative names, would easily be disclosed as just another sandwich or ambitious card maybe not really worth the reading, while others, heavily described across dozenz of pages may be found most promising and worth the precious time by hitting the white spot in your repertoire. The Symbolic Method app plays by these rules.

In case you have bought the Symbolic Method app please feel free to contact me to share your concerns, comments, and ideas. This project is not just about the app but also about the concept of notation for card magic, especially a symbolic notation. None of that is trivial. The combination is powerful because card tricks are subject to numeric details, sleight patterns, and a rigorous storyline - but what are your personal experiences? Do you need help or inspiration? The app has a contact-button, and it would be great to assist or learn from your feedback.

The latest new features include badges for Place (palms, pockets, hand, wallet, case), coordinates (of the table), Drama (effect, gesture, magic flash), Moment (synchronized, intersecting, fidget), Accion (Ascanio's initial, in transit, final actions).

Further horizons are opened with the new release: The entire repository of documents can now be queried for occurrences of search words. This way, all tricks applying certain moves, eg. palms, the pass, switches, etc., can be identified, enabling students to focus. The other new capability relates to URL links, which now can be launched directly from the app. This way, students can link internet based videos, or related text publications directly into a document. A glimpse of this can be inspected via its free sister app.
