I agree he knew how to play to the medium. This is one of the reasons he likely won.

Quote: If "okaish presentation" gets one enough votes to win BGT then I'm all for okaish presentation. The layman couldn't give a poop whether it was TV tested, or marketed in the magic community, and in all likelihood most people would have never seen it before. They were looking at it through different eyes than magicians.

By the way, laymen are not as dense as most magicians believe. if you look through the Youtube comments on his videos there are people discussing simillarities of his tricks to those on AGT. I'm positive that anyone who has seen both shows can see that as well. Real world experience shows that When lay people see a good trick (either live or on TV) they are going to remember it and expect it when they see magic. How many times had we all been asked by spectators "I Once saw this trick where the magician did... can you do it?" Second, THIS is a magic forum, so I believe our judgment should be more critical regarding that subject. His first and second acts had good effects but lacked originalty, which is highly valued when judging a magic act from a magician's POV. His final act's magic was underwhelming and was more emotional (which personally I didn't relate to because I'm not British). |

At what point in the proceedings do people think the producers of the show 'pegged' him to win?

The rumours that BGT is "fixed" are true to an extent: you wont win if you don't agree to sign an agreement with Cowell. You get told you aren't going to win. If you are wondering how I know this, several magicians who have done this - James Moore, Darcy Oak, and Jamie Raven - have all said the same thing. |

Having watched all 3 posted appearances, he is very good and has good stage presence. The way he combines magic effects together was very creative on his part, and adding his personal touches worked out very well. He is a magician to learn from, this is how magic and/or mentalism is presented.
The final "Sam The Bell Hop" display card effect was very good with a totally different story line. Although I did not get the relationship of bringing the person on stage, that the story was about, it did make a big finale for a close-up trick. He should do very well in Britain and a magician to watch for in the near future. I am sure most of you have all those tricks setting in a drawer someplace and are jealous as heck. |

We were given less time. It was only afterwards this became obvious. Once he was introduced as a serving soldier I knew he was going to the final. The quality of his performance didn't matter. I enjoyed his first appearance. I didn't see the second. His final appearance, though, made me cringe. That naked sentimentality and jingoistic nationalism was real lowest common denominator stuff. Dreadful.

After watching his performance for the millionth time, I can't believe it just hit me. This guy has what the magic world has far too little of...class. People can insinuate the show is fixed but the public vote takes care of that. My favourite act and one that got big play on the show (an Irish girl's choir) didn't even make the final. Susan Boyle, the biggest star to come out of BGT didn't win.
As for "naked sentimentality and jingoistic nationalism" who are you performing for, you or your audience? Obviously the audience loved it. |

Yes, but is it not the 'lowest common denominator' of an audience?
The kind that vote at a premium price phone line because they might win a prize? I know I sound like a snob but I do think the audience deserve better then having a union jack waved at them. I can't forget about the terrible damage done to the middle east in more recent times by the British army.
