Is there a variation of the stiff rope where the solid rope sticks straight up (vertically). I've only seen the rigid rope trick with the rope held horizontally. I guess it would require a different sort of gimmick?

You might want to look at http://www.kovarimagic.com/catalogueuk.html and scroll down to the Indian Dream Rope.
The effect is the rope is coiled in your hand and when you let go it uncoils itself swinging out and around your hand several times to end up pointing straight up into the air. It's thick rope about an inch or more in diameter. Good for a comedic effect but you could apply it not a non comedy presentation too. The floating balloon effect linked to above is a balloon trick, not a rope trick. Don't confuse method for effect.

I have my own version of the stiff rope on the Magic cONSERVATORY OF maagic, ICOM web site
The effect is a melding of three different versions. Stiff rope vertically and horizontaly and also the Doging Rope. The method is different and unexpected. Kotah |

The Indian rope trick by Grant is not the same as Grants improved rope of India which you can wind-up at the end of the routine.
Then there is the 13 foot version of the Indian rope trick with a tape in it. I wouldn't call it a comedy effect, it depends if you have a dup that you switch in and your presentation. And I've seen a few black n white movies where the rope is thrown up, between two buildings or (if I member right) on a stage and it is thrown way up into the batons. The last two probably wouldn't be considered "magic" as the trade relates to it. On a similar note Blackstone Sr did a sort of stiff rope with a handkerchief touching the floor And don't forget Mengies Spooks Alive which is a zombie type gimmick. Woody Pittman showed me a handkerchief with beads and a string inside, like a break a way wand.. And you could make it stiff and bend. I think he was selling these. But I always remember the non-gimmick method with a stiff handkerchief and it all in the way you fold it.

The Miniature Rope of India was sold 1st by U.F. Grant, then they later came out with the Improved Miniature Rope or India by U.F. Grant. Neither are available any longer. The improvement wasn't really an improvement, it was a step back.

IIRC...I bought one of those Miniature Ropes from Gen Grant. I returned it cuz it was most impractical! (Gen had started a "return policy".)

That clip of the Wonder Balloon by Ryota won Bill's Stand-up Trick of the Year for 2013. I'm surprised that he didn't recommend it here.
As David Todd said you can find it easily in the Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. The book is inexpensive and a best buy! You can buy it for under $20.00 on Amazon and have the method you are looking for and dozens of other great routines).

Harry, although it uses the idea of the Improved Miniature Rope Of India, it was not what the OP was after in his question, nor is it the same effect. The Wonder Balloon premise is a person's breath blows up a balloon and the air inside turns to Helium gas. The rope is only a convincer of balloon starting to float and pull up the rope that is tied to it.
Yes, I really like Wonder Balloon, it is worth every cent. In addition it leads to being able to routine other tricks around it. |

OP asked "Is there a variation of the stiff rope where the solid rope sticks straight up (vertically). I've only seen the rigid rope trick with the rope held horizontally..."
With the Wonder Balloon methodology the "effect" is different but the methodology would be the same to create the effect the OP is looking for.. The Wonder Balloon/Miniature Rope of India could be pressed into service to create the effect of a rope standing upright stiffly. Toss away the balloon and viola stiff upright rope (at least half is stiff! LOL!!). Sometimes a gimmick used for one effect can be used to create a different effect. In the case of the Miniature Rope of India we see that the original Grant idea of a rope going stiff and upright then going soft again could be used to create a different illusion/effect of a heavier than air balloon become lighter than air and floating. Tenyo sold a trick a couple of decades ago caller (I think) "Spinning Plate On The Rope". The effect was a flexible rope went stiff upright (as desired by the OP) and then a small, lightweight, plastic, plate was spun on the top end. The gimmicked rope would suffice to create the effect the OP is looking for. It is closer to his needs. The Tenyo item is long out of production but is simply made (and with out the spike at one end to facilitate the spinning plate). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oOEH6r4y0c I totally agree that Wonder Balloon is a great trick creating a wonderful effect for all the reasons you've mentioned. the best part is that it packs so very small even with other tricks routined with it.

BillO8, that is a combination of two magic tricks, one is the Stiff Rope or Rigid Rope and the other is Prayer Vase.
Not the Miniture Rope of India, but his is made to stand straight up, just takes more work in the manufacturing process to make it work vertically. The prayer Vase is a very old trick, it is mostly sold by magic dealers to kids who want to get into magic, and is found in some magic kits. Fun Inc. make it, but I only see nit once in a magic kit, with a larger white tall vase many years ago. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1011 The Stiff Rope is a version of a horizontal stiff rope, as I mentioned the guy had a very good one that would stand erect. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S13213 http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/6788 Most on line stores do not carry these products because the prices are so low. As a side note: The late great Ali Bongo from England use to use a vase and snake that did the same effect, stiff rope and prayer vase combo in his Act. |

I like the Stiff Rope, but the ones I have are low quality items.
Still looking for a good quality stiff rope. |

There was a different model from Hong Kong or China that was a solid rubber like material. Don't know if still available, came in a colorful small square box.
