It might be a strange question and maybe even upset someone here but I would like to know how good Tenyo products actually are.
What I remember from the time I bought them at the local magic store as a teenager about twenty years ago, they always exaggerated the effects in their description and had a unreliable quality. Sometimes you would get cheap made stuff that would break while trying it out, sometimes you would get a sturdy product that could survive a war and still work great. Everything would always be made of plastic (trying to look like wood but totally failing at it), and smell kinda funny. And if there were any translation of the asian description, it would be really bad and looking like it was the thousandth copy of a fax. As bad as this sounds, I really liked most of them and really had some fun with them. Since I recently saw a lot of Tenyo products at an online shop, I started to think again about them. I noticed they have almost doubled in price, but that might just be the normal inflation. Can you tell me anything about the new Tenyo products and if they are still more something for kids interested in learning magic, or if they also offer something interesting for the grown-up hobbyist? (And I know that there is a special elite edition, but I was thinking of the normal line.)

Jan, do you remember a specific item that suffered lack in quality? Admittedly, some tricks (resp. their mechanics) were kind of fragile but myself I can't think of any 'cheaply made' item, frankly.

You might have been buying illegal copies made by other companies. Tenyo prides itself, and always has, on making excellent quality products that WORK.

Richard seems spot on.

All the Tenyo products I have thus far are of top quality control and make, from packaging down to the smallest details on the items. There admittedly have been quite some knockoffs through out the years that may have given out the wrong impression, quite a pity.

@Nicolino: I remember a small case in black with a gold dragon on it that could change coins by sliding them in from different sides that would always get stuck or won't slide fully in.
Except from that it is possible that there has been fraud, even thought I doubt it, because I got them from a very known magic dealer. But thinking about it, it were some of the lower quality ones that I got on conventions. So it might be true. It is good to hear that quality is no problem. So that leaves the question, since I always linked Tenyo to beginners and children magic, if a grown-up is handling them, will they look strange or are they usable?

This "a small case in black with a gold dragon on it" does not ring any bells. The only small black case with a dragon on it that I can recall is "Mystery China Box," which uses no coins.

I remember looking forward to their items each year. They were ingeniously constructed and really thought out, plastic, yes!! But super effects. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......
