I hope Jay Leslie doesn't come across this thread as the entire premise of the OP is bound to bothers him ha ha :-D I on the other hand have found it very interesting and can vouch for the effectiveness of Workers Surprise by Paul Gordon and a good solid ring & string to impossible location.

The card effects that kill for me are:

Gimmicked:

Psypher
In A Flash (Sankey)
Invisible Deck
Double Back (Allen)
Painters Nightmare (Dancey)
Twisted Sisters (Bannon)
Turning Blue (Harlan off R&B DVD)
Twlight Angels (Harris)
Rising Deck
Vortex (Harlan)
Torched And Restored (Braun)
Silent Treatment (Allen)

Ungimmicked:

ACAAN (Barry version)
Quick As A Wink: (Fulves)
Timely Departure (Bannon)
Final Verdict (Bannon)
Back In Time (Sankey)
Search & Destroy (Fisher)
Dr. Daley's Last Trick
Ambitious (pop up)

These are usually the card effects that elicit the greatest reactions for me. They serve me well.

I truly hope that many will read and re-read this post...and that it's message is fully absorbed.

I'm not sure. Comments like this can come across as rather patronising sometimes.

Anyway, back to the tricks....

2 that are guaranteed to get me really strong reactions are signed card to cardcase, and vanishing deck (leaving their card between the palms). I think they are strong because they have a really simple plot, with no fancy moves or flourishes, they are short, very direct, involve the spectators, have a personal hook, and appear to be genuinely impossible. They are perfect for me as no gimmicks, no reset and powerful.

I've worked them for years so I know how to make them work and work big, but the points above are what make them successful and apply to most of the effects that I do.

The one's I used when I first started restaurant work 40 years ago still work for me and get great reactions:
1. The Bullet trick by Garcia (Super Subtle Card Miracles)
2. Card Warp (Roy Walton)
3. Prophecy Card (Bill Simon)

I used to do Card on the Ceiling, but dropped it, not because reactions, but because I felt it was a bad thing to do in the restaurant, and it destroyed a bit of the ceiling/made extra work for the staff.

I've added:
4. CardToon
5. Gemini Twins (it gets up to 4 people involved)

I just learned the Chicago Opener and it has blown away every group I performed for. They are entertained and amazed. Great trick to set the stage and qualify you as a real wizard!

No not really.

If you are asking just for fun to see an answer it is well said. But if you are trying to learn what an audience wants and how to give them that,it is very short sighted.

After all without the audience it is all just theory.

For me, selected card is signed, inserted somewhere in the center of the cards in the card box,
box is put away in my inside jacket pocket. Then I reach into my rear pocket and remove a wallet
that has a prediction in it. I ask them if it would be amazing, impressive etc... if my prediction
matched their selection and proceed to turn over the card.....which happens to be a 52-1 card Smile

There is this great laughter and smiling moment as I do this routine after already showing great
magic and they were expecting to see their card. They think I'm just being cute/funny.
When I open the flap and there is their signed card inside that gets pulled out.....
This is a great build up tension...release tension then.....What?!&^%$2 routine for me Smile

Shoot spectator with a pack of cards gun! I love the trick when you explain a deck is dangerous, one can lose money and one get lose your life. Card is selected and the pack made to look like a gun. Shoot the 'gun' the spectators card flies out hitting him after he says his last and final words! No gimmicks just a pack! Smile
