Some further info - although Johns article show an en even earlier article than the one mentioned by Frank Koval below.
ESCAPOLOGIST Many people incorrectly credit my old friend “Murray” the Australian illusionist with coining this word. My research uncovered an interesting detail in the “Burnley Express” dated April 17-22, 1911. The piece headed HANDCUFF KING IN BURNLEY, Houdini’s remarkable performance at the palace. In an interview after Houdini’s performance, the reporter says, “Escapeologist as Houdini terms himself, released himself in full view of the audience.” I am quite sure this is the first recorded use of the word, with or without the “E” included. I am also convinced that “Murray” did re-invent the word some twenty years later, and didn’t steal it from Houdini. It was simply a case of great minds thinking alike. On the point of the difference in the spelling, we must remember that Houdini spoke to this reporter who made the notes as he conducted the interview. So we must conclude that it was the reporter’s interpretation of the spelling and not as Houdini perhaps perceived it. Acknowledgement to Frank Koval

Dave - the earlier articles on Johns block also show that Houdini used the word "Escapeologist" so maybe Murray was the first to use it without the E....
