Hi, can someone point me to packet tricks that do not need a DL? It is a sleight that I am not good with, and makes me feel unconfortable. I am good with EC's so I can perform fine B'Wave, NFW, Twisted Sisters. Other thant these, any recommendations?

Hi Recoplon,
I have several favourites atm, none require DL just EC. they are as follows: Nothing but the Truth by Cameron Francis, Lie detector plot, Shock Twist by Gary Jones, Camouflage from www.Alakazam.co.uk view it on their website, I get great reactions from all of the above. Double Back by Jon Allen is brilliant but does use DL and EC, but I believe it can be achieved without them. all of the above I use regularly and get some amazing reactions. Look them up on line, well worth learning and not too difficult. I'm sure you will get a few more suggestions. Cheers, Paul |

On the other hand a small packet makes it easy to get a little finger break as you casually spread and close the cards. The break makes for an easy clean DL.

John Bannon's Royal Scam.
Also, Bannon's and Liam Montier's) B'rainiac is virtually DL-free - it's more briefly holding two cards as one, but doesn't need the usual turn face-up then face-down handling. Then go practice your DL. There's *SO* much that can be done with it. You're already ahead of the game as many think it's a very easy move, but it's not easy to do convincingly and consistently. For that you need to get to the point where your handling of the double is as free and easy as a single, and _THE SAME WAY_ as a single, especially the turnovers. |

I commend you for realizing your DL is not strong. I know that for myself, I will usually arrange my sets so that I do only one trick that uses the DL, one that uses the EC, one that uses a Gl***, etc. If one trick uses all three of those at some point, then I do a self-worker, some coin work, etc.
(I have seen some magi who use their DL in virtually every trick they do! I don't think this is wise -- people are going to spot it after you've done it four times!) Anyway, I strongly suggest you invest in a paperback by Jerry Mentzer called, "Packet Tricks." I think I paid less than $10 for it maybe ten years ago -- not every trick will be to your liking, perhaps, but I bet you will be very happy with it. (Off the top of my head, I regularly use three of them --- Kane's Jazz Aces, Wlaton's Royal Monte, and a great twisting trick by Vic Trabucco). A companion piece to this book is Mr. Mentzer's "Cuts, Counts, Moves, and Subtlety" which will teach you the many cuts, counts, and moves needed for packet tricks. Have fun.... and practice that DL! |

Look into learning the Steve Draun double lift (I was taught it in-person so maybe someone here can supply a reference where it is written up). It is particularly suited for small packets...no get ready...and it is my go to for packet trick DLs

I would definitely recommend working on your DL. I second those above who commend you for realizing your DL needs work.
I do think it is one of those moves that as a magician you have to have in your toolbox though. Big Blind Media have a DVD called the Double Lift Project which is very good. Then just practice for as long as it takes you to get it down. The move itself isn't difficult, like has been said already it's being convincing with it and comfortable in your execution. Turn over a single card continuously to see how you naturally turn over one card. Then work on making your DL replicate that exact movement. Or perhaps work on making your single turnover replicate your DL. Also one thing I found useful when I first started out was practicing a TL. After you get that down, a DL becomes far less daunting. I can't remember where I first learned the DL that I use, it doesn't involve a break or a get ready.. it just uses a slight bevel of the deck and counting off an extra card. As far as packet tricks go, I must admit I struggle to think of any not mentioned above that don't use a DL. I was going to mention Paul Harris' Reset, which uses a EC and either an AFTUS move or Hartman addition I forget which.. but it also requires an Ascanio spread and a couple of DL's |

While Dr Daley's Last Trick does require a DL, the way the trick goes makes it extremely easy to do with only a small amount of practice. I've never had anyone pick up on the DL (as it should be), so I would recommend that packet trick, as I think it is a nice and quick one which I've found works great!

There's a great one in the book Focus in which two face up aces turn face down, and the two face down ones turn face up. If you are proficient at that count, it's a quick visual trick. I will have to see if I can find the name of the effect for you.

I find the DL difficult with a full deck, but not bad at all with a packet. If you're interested in trying the packet DL again, you might want to check out Liam Montier's DVD, Double Lift Project. It includes some instruction on the packet DL that really helped me.
In my experience, it helps to have fairly new cards. You and I are in opposite positions, Recopion -- I'm just learning the EC! Wish me luck... |
