Hello Magic Café! This is my first post and I am happy to say that I have stumbled upon this forum and am hoping to expand my knowledge of magicians and of styles in the realm of magical performance. I am a very amateur magician at this point, working mostly with card tricks I learn off of youtube. Favorite trick ( This That and the Other card trick, if you're not familiar you gotta check it out, simple sleight of hand and easy to do from amateur perspective. I joined this forum to learn more about the magic community and talk about some of the magicians that have influenced me, and hopefully find out about new magicians you all know and love!
Cheers! Yellowthorn |

Welcome YellowThorn,
And welcome to Magic in general. Many Magicians find their way into Magic through Youtube now-a-days. Eventually you will find that there are real Magicians who invent these tricks and who's livelihoods can be undermined by unauthorized Youtube revelations. The Café can help steer you towards the original authors of great Magic. The Workers forum can be a little deep for a beginner (but a budding card enthusiast should read there). Check out "New to Magic" , "Table hoppers and Party Strollers"which includes discussions of some card Magic ,"Deckless" which deals with Packet Tricks and "All in the Cards" which talks about easy methods to achieve Magic (every trick needs a great performance). Have fun! -Mary Mowder |

Right on! I never really thought about the problem there. That is totally unfair to the inventors of the tricks if people are just giving them away on youtube. Hard to avoid at this point though. Are certain tricks considered intellectual property? If so they should be able to have youtube pull them down although youtube is not perfect at catching things and creating a software to scan for this would be near impossible. I know its possible with music because they can use the fingerprint of the sound file.
I'll start there for sure. Hopefully I'll find some cool new things to work on! Thanks for the advice! |

That would be correct.....well yes and no. Tellers Shadow rose is copyrighted, but I believe this is an isolated case. You may or may not have read about the Penn and Teller case, involving his Shadow Rose? If you have not, in short, someone was ripping his Shadow Rose effect and offering to sell it/expose it through youtube. As it was a protected effect, Teller sued and won. ^Link to article about tellers case; http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq......c-690347 Now, being copyrighted, I'm sure greatly helped his case. I'm guessing his budget and pick of lawyer also played a huge part. Even music on youtube seems to be a big problem. I've seen videos get away with using copyright material. I've also seen youtubers change the pitch of a song ever so slightly, thus for it not raise red flags in their copyright infringement system. Overall it's a big issue of ethics, but what can you really do when there are billions on the internet and no one to hold them accountable. How do you regulate such a cyber-market? On the flip side if someone makes a home video of themselves dancing, and wants to use a current pop song (or whatever...) should they not be able to? Especially if they purchased the original audio from the original artist? I guess the issue arises when we get into ad-revenue - now the producers and making money (partially) off of someone else's song.
