What Tha – Rodger Lovins
Product description : Well, this is a hard one. Describing the effect will be pretty weird : you make a strange animal appear for a few seconds in your hand and disappear as quickly ! This is between the prank and a magic trick but it gets awesome reactions, especially from girls. Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $19.95 and you can find it in nearly every Murphys Magic partner shop. What you get : You get a small ziplock bag with links to video instructions, they are not very well shot but they do the job teaching you handlings and way to deal with the gimmick. The gimmick is very very well made, it looks like a weird animal, between a bird, a mouse, like a mix of multiple things ! Very realistic as well, pretty satisfied with what I received. Teaser : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjQNs3JIvOA The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end. THE CONS : - This is maybe not a con for everyone but this is not a trick but a nice piece to put between 2 routines, don't expect to build a whole act on this little thing. - Maybe some of you will have to consider to who you will perform this, some people can react very strongly and sometimes, they won't enjoy the moment. THE PROS : - It's nearly self working, if you know about the little hand by Mr. Ammar, you should be fine with this. - It's different, not a pick a card trick and people don't know what to expect. I think this moment of surprise is what makes the trick so strong. They don't know what you're doing with your hands in a weird position, they don't know what will come out and if you build the tension around this moment, you can have them react much more strongly to it. - The handling is done in a way your dirty hand is not seen by the public, all the focus is on the other hand which is empty. - It doesn't take any pocket space, you can store your gimmick to protect it from wear. Overall rating : I quite like this, the reactions I got were better than what I expected so very pleased. I won't using this all the time but since it takes no space at all, it's in my case, ready to go ! 3/4 hearts. As for the difficulty level, there is nothing very difficult about this trick so you can completely focus on your presentation and build the tension around what's going to happend, which is great ! 1/5 stars. Similar products : If you like this kind of trick, I urge you to check out The Web by Jim Pace and my friend boris using your phone, they are absolutely amazing. Thanks to Murphys Magic for sending me this product !

Another review of What Tha!
Rating 4 out of 5 stars. What Tha is not so much of a magic trick as it is a close-up freak out gag. With that being said, if you are into shocking your audience with practical joke-like tricks, then this inexpensive heart-beat raising gimmick is for you. With the What Tha gimmick, you have your hands cupped. You open your hands slightly and a tiny animal pokes its head out of your hands. It freaks your spectators out severely. This is likely because they were not actually expecting to see a real animal, but some finger trick. The animal disappears and the spectator is left freaking out and wondering what exactly did they see. The reactions are very strong from both men and women, but the women tend to be more alarmed by the animal. The gimmick is well made and looks like a real animal. It is a clever idea. It is a one size fits all product, but it won't work with every finger size. The gimmick that came in my package was a bit sticky, which is not ideal, but does not inhibit your ability to perform What Tha. Because the gimmick is made with real feathers, it may get a bit ratty with frequent use. The trick is explained in a 12 minute You Tube video, which is taught by Rodger Lovins. It is very easy to learn and the video likely could have been 3 minutes long - or 9 minutes shorter. The quality of the instructional video is not great and consists of Lovins speaking into a video camera while sitting on a couch in what is likely his basement. The instructions are a bit repetitive, but this trick is easy to master and the video gets the job done. Although there were small snippets of some live performances, I would have liked to have seen a full live performance with full audio. Lovins suggests a clever way to transport the gimmick in your pocket which should protect it from normal wear and tear. The promotional video and the ad copy are accurate, but the claim that this is the "coolest impromptu effects available today" may be a bit of hyperbole. For what this is, it is fun and entertaining. There is no doubt that What Tha will appeal to the select performer. www.mylovelyassistant.com/reviews/view/4746

Regarding the "one size fits all" - I took a small piece of Velcro - the smooth side (not the tiny hook side) and stuck it inside my gimmick. Perfect fit!

I have this for about a week now and the effect is very good, how ever. I am very disappointed with the product. It has an oily sticky finish, placing it in my pocket, it is very stick and lint is stuck to it. And in less than a week, I lost one of the eyes. I never dropped it or miss-used it. also one feather came off and was stuck to the inside of my pocket.
Over all, love the idea, do not like the quality of the product. |

I carry mine in a large thumb tip and it shows no wear and tear.

I went to my local magic shop and mine would not fit in their largest TT. I am trying to find 35mm film canisters, they are rare these days. But until I find some kind of replacement for my "What Tha" I am in no hurry.

I emailed Roger twice and posted here a few times, of my experience with the poor quality of the gimmick. I love the effect, but I am extremely disappointed with the gimmick. And even more disappointed that Roger has not replied .

If I do get a replacement, I will post it as well. I will also be returning the original , so he can see where to make adjustments.

Baldini - I had an issue with the feathers, and ended up gluing some on with Elmers Glue. However, my gimmick was never oily or sticky, and the eyes seem to be on for good. You may have just received a "defect". (Let's hope somebody is not already making a knock-off)

I got mine from the magic warehouse. And I know the owner refuses to buy anything China. I'm actually going to send my original back to Roger so he can see from self.

I am going to buy one, is there only one colour. I live in UK.

They only come in one color. I've used mine extensively for the past 3 months. It still works great and gets good reactions, but it is showing a lot of wear. Almost all of the feathers are gone, and I'm missing one eye. This may not be a good prop for the working professional. I may see Rodger next month, and I will bring it up with him.
