Thanks, TStark, for the informative post! Yes, it wouldn't make sense that Histed would claim to be the inventor as it could be easily checked.

Thinking beyond the Square Circle, what is the next stage in the evolution of production props? I believe it is the iPad. What you see on the screen is what you pull out into the real world.

Hello Steve
Joe Fenichel's Square Circle with the birdcage finale' was called CAGEY CANISTER. I'm not certain, but I seem to remember one production run had a modification that would permit the top to be displayed in the "locked position" and set upon a table; most of those sold required the performer or his assistant to continue holding the cage so gravity would keep the lid at the top of the cylindrical cage. Thank you so much, Julie! That's it, The Cagey Canister! I'm going right now to check mine and see if it's the locked one or not.
I found a description of the Histed Chinese Pagoda and what appears to be an earlier incarnation, simply entitled, The Milk Trick. I was surprised to see that this first inception had that the cylindrical load chamber was also a Phantom Tube! This is a great idea, as you can remove the cylinder, show it empty, and then do a silk production away from the larger apparatus. You then put it back and do even more from the chamber. It's in Masterpieces of Magic, Volume One by Douglas Craggs MIMC, undated but some preliminary research shows it as 1949. It's funny but the Square Circle is perfect for liquid productions as in Histed Milk Trick but I've never seen a liquid production from one. |

Another interesting historical point: At around the same time in the 1930's (I think) George Robinson's mentor, Fred Haenchen, "invented" a BA trick he called The Triangle Production.
His handling is significantly different from the now standard Square Circle/Histed procedure. The props are similar, except Haenchen's outer container is a 3-sided loosely hinged configuration. Julie |

Credit where credit is due, Tstark, referenced the two Histed inventions already, I just provided the reference. However, don't be too quick to discount Haenchen in all of this, in Masterpieces of Magic the editor writes, "The trick is an application of the background masking principle, and probably the initial idea of the apparatus developed from the three fold screen." Now you've mentioned Haenchen used a three fold screen in the Triangle Production. Could Haenchen's idea be the tree from which the fruit was plucked? I'm aware of the three fold black a__ screen used in stage illusions as in Tarbell. But if Haenchen was the first to do so in a parlor setting then he deserves a mention in all this.

I did check my Cagey Canister and it is the locking one! Thanks again, Julie, for the info and its name and thanks to Hayre on the name of the inventor.
