I am aware of the Topsy Popsy Wand where the end pops off in the air... I did see a magician use a similar wand where the end popped off but was attached to a string so it didn't fly in the air..do you know where that wand can b purchased? thanks

Hi Adam -
As far as I know, that's an alteration to the "Topsy Popsy Wand" (aka "Popaway Wand"), that performers make on their own. David Ginn was teaching this tip in his lectures (and books) many years ago. David Ginn credits the idea to Karrell Fox. I learned it from David. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=65603 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......c=149810 (a nice discussion of the popaway wand / topsy popsy wand on page 4 of this thread) http://www.ginnmagic.com/index.php?page=......Itemid=1 - Donald

If you just want to buy one, you'll find them HERE: http://www.ustoymagic.com/catalog/produc......way-wand
If you want to know all the things you can do with the wand, including ways to hang onto the ends after they pop off, check out The Wizards' Journal #29: "Tricks With a Pop-Away Wand".

I tried doing it both ways and found that without rope / streamer and just having top pop off kids react better...any opinions

Sometimes you want the tops to pop off completely so the kids have to chase them while you do "certain things unnoticed." That's why I connect the tops with magnets on the end of a ribbon, so I can choose which way to have it work from time to time.

I think the reaction is much better with ends loose. For example I like to point my down so the end hits my foot and I jump around in 'agony' clutching my foot. The kids love that. It wouldn't work if the end was on string. Obviously the downside is that the kids end up chasing it but as jimgerrish says, that can sometimes be a useful distraction

I've been using one of these for a very long time. I don't want to put string on the ends so it doesn't hit the floor. The reactions I get from using this wand are very very good.

One of my favorite props/jokes! Definitely better with a string attached internally so the cap doesn't fly too far.
My favorite strategy for repeat laughs: pop the wand, look down at the hanging end, and place the length of the wand under your arm as you slam the popped end on again. Result: the end behind you pops off, and you can repeat this a few times until you give up in frustration. |
